Windows 11 detects wrong TrackPad model (because i've installed the wrong one ;) )

#1 Post by Quardah » Sun Oct 08, 2023 10:00 pm

Hi all.

This is concerning my T540p. When i got the T540p i recall buying a T550 TrackPad for the physical buttons and installing it on the T540p. It worked well when running under Linux. It seems like Linux knew the model and loaded the right driver.

Now under Windows 11, the physical buttons are not working. I believe Windows checks the ThinkPad model number and installs the driver for the original TrackPad rendering the buttons useless. What is weird is the in the Windows mouse settings, there is a tab for "ThinkPad" which allows me to use only the TrackPoint, but doing so will render the mouse unusable because neither the physical buttons nor clicking on the TrackPad allows for a click (lol).

Anyone has an idea how to fix this issue? Can i install the T550p TrackPad driver via Windows?
Daily driver : P16s AMD Gen1 Ryzen 7 6850u Pro - Arch Linux.

I had owned a T431s? or maybe a T440p and had a similar problem.
It was never able to figure out two finger scrolling, It would keep on messing up.
I wouldn't have the correct thinkPad middle scroll, I would get the busted windows one, which would keep on scrolling despite being done with the input.
I was never able to figure it out on Windows 10, I assume the same would be with 11.
this was after I downloaded both drivers for both systems, t431s and T450s...
I didn't have the problem before, as it worked with the swap without any problems, but maybe it depends on the trackpad/point model that is the issue.

It is a big pain, I know when I installed LXLE Linux it just worked fine, but it's harder to sell a Linux based system than the 99% wanted Winblows machine. :x

Hi and thank you for your reply. Very appreciated!

If i understand correctly, you got the T450s driver and installed it manually in windows for the TrackPad with physical buttons to work properly? On your T431s/T440p ?

Probably T440p because only the T440/T440s/T440p/T540p got this horrible buttonless TrackPad... -__-
