what x series should I go with?

#1 Post by Whitieiii » Sat Jun 24, 2017 2:46 am

I'm now in the market for another x series Thinkpad and can't deside on what I should go with... I got an x220 right now but the sound on it is so low I am not able to hear anything from it plus the think light annoys me... I would like to know if I should go with an x230 or x240 as my next machine? much louder sound and backlight keyboard are two of the things I want the most in my next x series machine... what should I go with?
My Current Thinkpad Collection:
A30 Pentium 3 512MB ram 55 or 58GB HDD Win 98SE
T410 1st Gen i5 4GB ram 2x320 GB HDD Win XP & 7 Pro
X220 2nd Gen i5 8GB ram 120 GB SSD win 7 Pro
T430 3rd Gen i5 6GB ram 500GB HDD Win 7 Pro
T440s 4th Gen i5 8GB ram 300 GB SSD win 10 Pro

I guess it depends on how much you want to spend, and any other requirements you may have.

Besides modern games, there isn't much my x230 with an i7-3520m, 16gb ram and a Samsung 850 Pro SSD can't do. I cannot comment on the sound level of the x220, but it is plenty high on my x230. The 2 levels of backlit keyboard + thinklight is perfect on the x230, and I use the backlit a lot.

For now, I cannot really see when I would want to upgrade, but when I do, it will probably be to an x270, because:

The next models only have one ram slot, and the architechture of the x240 only allows 8gb per slot.
The x250 allows for 16gb, but still only has a normal Sata SSD-bay. Ie not much of an upgrade from my x230, in my opinion.
The x260 uses DDR4-ram, but the M.2 slot is an outdated server version.
Only the x270 has proper NVMe support.

So my plan is to keep my x230 for as long as I am satisfied with it, and the find at least an x270 for cheap, when it is time to replace it.

I don't recall either of my X220 having quiet speakers. Perhaps figuring that out will cost less than a new machine.

I find the X220 too quiet for me I think the x240 maybe a good choice but idk my T440s has the best speakers outta all of my Thinkpads so I'm thinking the X240 may be the one I go with... now another question can the x250 trackpad be used on the x240? I'd love to get real buttons on the x240 since I only ever use the trackpoint on Thinkpads

if the x250 trackpad can be used in an x240 then I might go with an x240 I don't ever use the trackpad only the trackpoint and I don't care for more than 8 GB of ram in this machine because it isn't needed for just web browsing and watching vids plus having a Sata SSD will keep the cost of an SSD way down... I may go with the top of the line CPU in the x240 as well just to be future proof

I run my X230 with 8GB RAM, a 256GB mSATA SSD with W7 in the WWAN slot, and a 500GB 7200rpm HD for storage in the main drive bay.
That HD is set to switch off after 3 minutes non-use to save battery.
Mine has also been updated with nitrocaster's FHD-mod.
X230 can take up to 16GB RAM and has a backlit keyboard option.
It can also be modded with the classic keyboard from e.g. the X220.
What more do you want?

how is the sound compared to the X220? is the sound louder? that's one thing I hate about the x220 is how quiet the speaker is! I love the x230 and newer keyboards with the backlight option but don't need more than 8 gb of ram for just browsing the web and watching youtube videos... my T440s has a loud speaker so that's why i'm thinking of going with an x240 but if the x250 trackpad can't be retrofired into the x240 than I might just need to save for the x250... don't need the extra benifit of 5th gen i7 and 16 GB ram the x250 has but you never know if I can't change the x240 trackpad it may be good to save up for the x250

X250/T450/T550 trackpad on X240/T440/T540 is no problem.
X240 + X250 trackpad + labor probably costs just as much as an X250.

As for sound, I rarely bother listening to laptop sound, but when I must, I use one of these: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product. ... 6836280003
Great sound!

Maybe your own speakers are shot?
