X230 hardware replacement

#1 Post by diling3r » Sun Oct 27, 2024 10:22 am

Hi fellow thinkpaders,

can you help me with some specs ?
Here is some hardware I need to replace/purchase on my X230 :
  • usb 2.0 port (replacement)
  • usb 3.0 port (replacement)
  • mSata SSD
  • SSD drive
Maybe you could point me to a reference site. That would be great actually.

Thanks

There's plenty of videos showing how to replace the HDD or SSD on the internet. Just ask any search engine. USB ports on the X230 are attached to the motherboard, so soldering skills will be required to replace them, You may be better served buying a new planar or used X230 for replacement parts if they're defective need to be swapped.

Ok thanks.
But I was asking for specs. This is not how, this is not which particular model, but what hardware will fit : a list of specs.

Well axur-delmeria partly answered my question for the Sata SSD.

Get the X230 schematics, those part numbers are listed on there.

Oh that's very technical.
Looking for something in-between I guess. "Human-readable".
For instance a doc that tell me mSata II will fit but mSata III won't.

SATA II and III are interchangeable, but III will run at II speeds in a SATA II machine like the X230, which you'd never notice for most uses. Then you'll need to buy a mSATA SSD if you want to add one to your X230. I personally find used on eBay offers the best value.

As for the USB ports you can replace them, I presume they're not working, if you know how to solder, but if not, you need to swap in a different planar with functioning USB ports, either new or used, if you want them working again.

I'll stick to SATA II then.

Actually I don't know if I can buy generic 2.0 and 3.0 ports they sell on ebay or if it's more specific than that.

Hi,

I'm back with my USB ports issue.

Could someone please point me to USB 2.0 and 3.0 replacement items (both) ? I'd rather buy new parts than used if available.

I'll do the soldering myself.

Like I said over a year ago, get the X230 schematics: https://www.alisaler.com/lenovo-thinkpa ... schematic/
They have the P/N.

And then I replied these schematics aren't 'human readable' and they still aren't I'm afraid...

So anyone willing to give me some support with my USB ports replacement issue is welcome.
Pointing me to an item on amazon or ebay or the likes would be helpful too.
Maybe some of you have done this already and would like to share their experience. Would be interesting to hear.
