x230 - Intel SSD 520 - Linux

Hi all,

Just got my new x230, shoved a 520 240GB in it, and installed linux.
My sectors are aligned, but hdparm shows only 360 MB/s sequential reads.

Has anyone measured performance? This seems a little slow to me (even though it's blazing fast compared to a mechanical hard drive).

Thanks

Hello and welcome to the forum. I just checked a simple test with hdparm on my linux machine (see signature below for T420) and received the following results (3 runs):

sudo hdparm -tT /dev/sda1
/dev/sda1:
Timing cached reads: 9270 MB in 2.00 seconds = 4636.61 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 1200 MB in 3.00 seconds = 399.54 MB/sec
steve@steve-ThinkPad-T420:~$ sudo hdparm -tT /dev/sda1

/dev/sda1:
Timing cached reads: 9968 MB in 2.00 seconds = 4986.03 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 1190 MB in 3.00 seconds = 396.30 MB/sec
steve@steve-ThinkPad-T420:~$ sudo hdparm -tT /dev/sda1

/dev/sda1:
Timing cached reads: 9970 MB in 2.00 seconds = 4987.64 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 1198 MB in 3.00 seconds = 399.33 MB/sec

If you have a specific test you ran, it might help for comparison to provide that command line... Hope that helps...

Using the disk utility that shipped with Ubuntu 12.04, I ran the read only disk benchmark on the Intel 520 drive with the following results:

Minimum read rate: 416.3 Mb/s
Maximum read rate: 560.6 Mb/s
Average read rate: 548.5 Mb/s

For avoiding opening second topic, is it possible to install whatever ssd you want on x230? I thought you could only install msata. Am I wrong? Can I replace the hard disk with ssd? I know about the 7mm limit.

is it based on a generic linux software I could use or is it ubuntu only?

I took out the 320gb and shoved a 9mm 520ssd 2.5" in there, with the spacer removed
works fine

Hey sob (that just sounds odd...) :)

The disk utility is Palimpsest and should be available for your flavor of linux http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palimpsest_Disk_Utility, the same with hdparm. Hope that helps...

thanks, I have results similar to the ones posted above.... slightly below though... not sure if it's because my system is running on the SSD

Good to hear they are close. I'm booting off the SSD too, the 750gb 7200 RPM drive in my sig is in the ultrabay and I use it for VMs.
