When was X230 released? When will we have an X230S or X240? What specs are likely?

It should have called it the X240, as it has a new chassis, but the naming scheme seems to be yet another thing they are screwing up.

There is so much wrong with the T431s that I hold no hope for the future of the X-series either. What they are doing to the ThinkPad brand now makes the new keyboard seem trivial in comparison. Oh, and of course they've screwed up the keyboard even more now.

Oh god, I just did a search for T431s specs...they really are killing this brand. Might as well be Asus Thinkpad now. No more track point buttons...seriously?! F-keys require the Fn button?! Uugh!

I dislike being negative. Truly, I WISH that there was a model of laptop coming up, ANY brand at this point, that I can get excited about. As of now, I don't really see anything. The Asus UX51 series has everything I like, and I can even deal with the price point, but the touchpad on those is sluggish and I question the long-term dirability. Come on Lenovo...don't go following the crowd!

I do find this a bit disconcerting, but I'll reserve judgment until I use one, which probably won't be for a while.

X240 have to wait until the second half of the year (for Haswell), but the s Modell ThinkPad X230s will be released sooner: http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q= ... 8874,d.Yms It is just an UltraBook Edition of the X230 (looks like a X1 Carbon / X230 crossover)

The Chinese language manual for the X230S is here:

Ha ha. It makes me smile. It just makes me smile :)

Because, since they didn't hesitate to screw up the most notable feature of Thinkpads - i.e. the keyboard - it really is unsurprising that they mess around with the other features (trackpoint, hinges, etc.).
And it's no longer disappointing; as the point of non-return has already been crossed since the x230's generation. From that moment, it was clear that they intended to go mainstream and cut costs at the same time.

Hm, same story, no trackpoint buttons. Is anyone able to detect from the PDF whether IPS display option is still available ?

It is not noted in this PDF. There is also no info about brightness of the screen. I guess you will have to wait for this info until the announcement.

The X230s does look nicer than previous models, which is the whole reason for this outrage, but at the cost of practicality and ergonomics (and most probably durability), just like an Apple product.

However, aesthetically speaking, having the logos on the lid flipped over the other way just looks wrong. The two ThinkPad logos no longer overlap. It's just indicitive of the design philosophy being tossed aside.

So...are there any "good" laptops on the market right now that live up the the exacting (nostalgic) standards of Thinkpadders? Will we have to resort to exotic motherboard swaps into older chassis (mmmm, that would be FUN)?

While I just got an x230 to upgrade my rather again x61, I was contemplating the franken-pad concept.

USB stick based android computers are pretty astounding these days, especially compared to my first thinkpad - a 350 - 486slc 25MHz :)

couple that to a hdmi->lvds converter and something to translate the keypresses & trackpoint to usb.....

I think that's actually the T431s, judging by the areas on the sides of the keyboard. It looks like a 14" screen rather than 12".

It looks like the MacBook style hinges still allow it to open to 180 degrees, which is something some people were wondering about for some reason.

The 5.5 row keyboard and buttonless trackpoint are abysmal developments. They totally ruin it for me.

No, thats clearly the X230s. You can see that if you look at the ports, they have the same layout as in the X230s User guide.

Code: Select all

The 5.5 row keyboard
What do you mean? It is still a 6-row keyboard.

No it's not. The top row is no longer function keys by default and act as special functions like on the Edge and X1xxe series. The keyboard is now even worse than in the '30 generation.

It is in fact, since the keys are all still there. The function of the keys in the 6th row can be changed easily by pressing FN + Esc. Just because it is by default the other way that doesn´t mean that it is one row less. Thats just not logical.

The keyboard is not worse, since they returned to the F-key separation.
