X230 Tablet Boots win 8 in 6 seconds :D

#1 Post by ttxzee » Wed Feb 06, 2013 1:37 am

Hi everyone,

With the latest UEFI "BIOS" and a new Crucial SSD my X230T is now able to boot in 6 seconds! :)
Check it out yourself:

Windows 8 was installed on the launch date and it's still super fast :)

Any idea why your boot screen says Lenovo where mine says Thinkpad?

I set mine up for that (I had to reenable hibernate) and while the screen popped up after showing the blue windows logo (which I didn't see there) for a second, I got the graphic...but the mouse wouldn't move for another 3 seconds. Maybe the i3 2370m is that much slower(which wouldn't surprise me), but the Samsung 830 and 8GB RAM should be comparably fast.

Hi, Is your BIOS set to UEFI? I reinstalled my OS under UEFI to be fully compatible with Windows 8 Secure Boot. If you have BIOS 2.xx and still sees "ThinkPad" at boot then you are running in legacy mode.

yep, I set it to UEFI after updating to 2.51 the latest BIOS (which I downloaded this morning after seeing this video).

*edit*

apparently even though I enabled UEFI, it tries to do legacy first. When I set it to UEFI only, it stops at the boot menu, and when I select the hard drive, it just sits there. Is there a way to go from legacy to UEFI without a rebuild? If this is going to require a rebuild, it can wait until I decide I need to rebuild it again (probably not until SP1 is released)

Does Win 7 supports UEFI? If so, do I see similar improvement?

I believe the reason for that is UEFI doesn't have native NTFS support. Under UEFI the system first boots a FAT partition which boots the NTFS OS partition.
You have to reinstall Win 8 on UEFI mode for it to work under UEFI.. the drive needs to be reformatted and changed from MBR to GPT.
If you want to install Win 8 with UEFI make sure your usb drive(if you are using one) is formatted to FAT32. as UEFI can't recognize NTFS.

the benefit of UEFI is more secure and faster while GPT allows you to have many more primary partitions.
Windows 8 will also allow you to control some UEFI BIOS settings right inside the OS.
macs have been using GPT and UEFI for a long time now and MS is finally catching up...

as for windows 7 I believe it also works with UEFI but same as Win 8 you have to install the OS under UEFI mode. however there's no clear advantage of using Win 7 with UEFI since the OS doesn't support secure boot and it doesn't allow you to change UEFI BIOS settings like Win 8 allows.

To create a win 7 uefi install, its essentially like creating a win 7 usb boot drive except you have to move a few files around.

I did this a while back on my ssd but I still dont get insane boot speeds or the lenovo boot screen (ehh, I kinda like the thinkpad one). Maybe I need to try updating to the latest bios. *wow, I guess Im still on 1.13 bios!

I believe the Lenovo boot screen is a windows 8 thing. if you look at all the new Win 8 equipped pcs they all have the oem logo as the boot screen. it's definitely something the UEFI BIOS have to be compatible with but i'm sure with out win 8 it'll still show ThinkPad...
