retrofitting a backlit keyboard

I didn't know if anyone here has retro-installed the backlit keyboard on the X230. When you call Lenovo, they say it can't be done. I think that is probably part of the script.
As long as it has the voltage supply, which should be non-unique to the motherboard, only a bios would be an obstacle. If you copied someone's bios with the backlight, seems like it would work.
