In other words, either too low (1366x768 for the X220 and X230) or too high (FHD on the X240s). Give me 1600x900 please, like Panasonic's SX and NX series!
Puppy wrote:- 2.84 lbs (1.29 kg)
This is a significant improvement over the 3.4 lbs of the X220 and X230, but still a downgrade from the 2.4-lb X200s and X201s.

Because it was not! I was referring to the X200s, not the X200. Here are Lenovo's official specs for the two systems, copied from http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail. ... MIGR-73156:

ThinkPad X200 System:
◦4 cells battery: Starting from 1.35kg (2.98 lb)
◦6 cells battery: Starting from 1.48kg (3.26 lb)
◦9 cells battery: Starting from 1.64kg (3.61 lb)

ThinkPad X200s System:
◦4 cells battery: Starting from 1.1kg (2.43 lb)
◦6 cells battery: Starting from 1.23kg (2.71 lb)
◦9 cells battery: Starting from 1.38kg (3.05 lb)

The powerpoint is pretty revealing of the continued downward spiral of the Thinkpad design and the blessed ignorance of the new manglement team at Lenovo.

The trackpad is celebrated at least four times - newer, faster, larger, better, glass, with magical Windows-8 charms.
There is even mention of an additional, "flexible wireless touchpad". (Which is it, a touchpad, or trackpad?)

Memory downgrade! One slot. Enjoy your 8GB upper limit!

But the best news of all ... you can now charge your iPad!

Ugh.

I will hold final judgement until I can test-drive the button-less mouse buttons, but previous encounters with the Edge Twist, which *has* buttons, was already extremely disappointing. The 6-row and chiclet weren't so much a problem, it was the king-sized palmrest.

I was surprised by this myself actually. Planned obsolescence.

Nothing beats the Sony X Series (11.1" 1366x768) that I currently own: 1.41 lbs (0.640 kg)! Sony is still the top brand when it comes to making the lightest laptops. My next laptop will be the Sony Pro 13 (13.3" FHD touchscreen), weighing 2.34 lbs.

So if I understand where Lenovo is taking this, there's only one DIMM slot for 8GB max, which means the system is pretty much already obsolete even before it's released. And for those who do some serious traveling, they might be FUBAR if one of their batteries craps out while they're on the road? And it looks as if they designed it for WIN 8, which from what I understand isn't very popular. Holy crap - I've been holding onto a very much used and abused X60s for this???

So answer me this - is this really that much of a step up from the X230? I might have to grab me one before it's too late. Very, very disappointed......

What percentage of users would need more than 8GB?
LouG wrote:So answer me this - is this really that much of a step up from the X230?
The X240s is a major step-up from the X230. IMO, the X220 and X230 were, along with the X30/31/32, the least appealing X Series Thinkpads to date. (I have an X31 and an X32 right now, and they are gross!)

^^^^^ I don't pretend to know more than the regulars on the forum. I'm no techie - I'm merely a long-time TP lover and user. I buy and use my Thinkpads for 6 years or so before replacing them. Need a new battery - just buy and swap. I don't like the idea that one would need to watch a video on how to replace the battery, or worry about it if they're on the road. In regards to the 8BG memory - I get that this is all most might need.....for now. My X60s came maxed out at 2GB, and let me just say that the Dell desktops I bought my admin people three years ago came with 8 (and I believe are expandable to 16GB) and they're lightening fast compared to my 2GB. Maxing out at 8GB doesn't leave much room for future expansion - hence the planned obsolecence I suppose.....

The X240 might be the better machine, but I wouldn't be surprised if the X230 isn't gobbled up by buyer before long. Just my $0.02.

i7-4500U isn't so bad. I would really like to see the i7-4558U with Iris 5100. This one still looks promising.

Guess I'm done with the X series. Even in non-s X240 only one DIMM slot and only low-power CPU.
Hope HP comes out with a good update to the 2570p.

Maximum memory for the X60s is 4 GB. The operating system will see only 3 GB, but that's still better than 2 GB.

Anyone care to speculate as to whether these new FHD displays can be retrofitted to an X220 or X230? Really that's the only thing I care about... as sleek and sexy as it may look, the buttonless trackpad just looks like a dealbreaker to me :-(

(Wild speculation inbound)

I'd wager they made changes to the video connector to accommodate FHD, being such a big step-up from 1366x768. You never know, but I wouldn't get your hopes up.

X240(s) uses eDP instead of LVDS, as all new Note/Ultrabooks do. X220/X230 used LVDS as the display connector. That means that retrofitting is not impossible, but very complicated.

there's a sealed and a swap-able battery, 8gb limit does suck
--

Whether you get the T440s or X240, though, you'll be treated to both a sealed, internal battery, as well as a second one that you can swap in and out. And, because your computer will always default to the internal power source, you can remove the spare without having to power down the system. That's good news for people who work in healthcare or any other industry where restarting the computer means going through numerous security protocols all over again. What's more, the same swappable battery will work with different Lenovo machines, whether they have 12- or 14-inch screens, which means IT departments can issue them indiscriminately. All told, depending on the battery capacity, the X240 is rated for over 10 hours of battery life, whereas the T440s could in theory go all the way up to 17. Wowza.

^^^^ I built one online on 10/23 and IIRC the ship date was either 11/5 or 11/10, 2013. FWIW I built it with the 1TB HD.

I just wanted to echo my disappointed with the way the thinkpad line is being degraded. Looking at these stats it looks like the 12.5" is going to 13"? Am I reading that right? Based on the top down of the keyboard area, the size of the trackpad, and the placement of the fingerprint scanner, it looks like this would have to be the case.

One RAM slot is the real killer though. The thing that made the x2xx series appealing was the ability to have an inordinate amount of RAM in it. For me, at least, it made running multiple VMs on the fly not only do-able but no problem. It was a significant factor in purchasing it instead of something else.

I do like the inclusion of touch. In Windows 8 touch is not only useful but a real time saver.

Having not posted much on here, I wont drone on, but I really miss the old IBM thinkpad days.

I did not find a dock on ordering page and i hope its not that usb3 display link crap the x1 carbon has.

My company is a mobile fleet... so having a dock is pretty important to drop in/out.

Plugging in wires every time you get back to the office is huge hassle

@rsutoratosu,

X240s without vPro = No Dock
X240 (all versions) = New Mechanical DockingPort (CS13 Docks, ThinkPad Basic, Pro and Ultra Docks)

So it depends on what you ordered.
2disbetter wrote:Looking at these stats it looks like the 12.5" is going to 13"? Am I reading that right?
No, thats not the case. The X240(s) still has the same dimensions (width and lenght) as the X220/X230. It only looks like that, because the keyboard is now a bit smaller than before and compared with the T440(s).
