Replace RTL8188CE with Intel 6200? or?

#1 Post by kennyschiff » Sun Jul 28, 2013 4:29 pm

I recently went traveling and exclusively used WiFi for 2 weeks and discovered all kinds of issues with the native RTL8188CE WLAN card. I'm running Ubuntu 13.04 and it seems that issues with this card are quite common under Linux. Several folks have recommended replacing the Realtek card with an Intel 6200 and using the WWAN slot and half height to full height adapter (which I've ordered on eBay) to avoid being blacklisted by the BIOS.... The workaround that has been suggested is to disable the WLAN slot in BIOS. I imagine that the downside of this approach is that indicator lights for WiFi will not work, nor will the hardware WiFi switch (not the worst thing)...

If I use the WWAN slot and the 6200 (which has 3 antennas), how should I connect, given that the Realtek appears to only have 2?

Assuming I wanted to use the actual WLAN socket, would this card work and be whitelisted?

Any help is appreciated...

As long as the 6200 has a Lenovo FRU this card should work normally and will not be whitelisted.

Remove the Realtek and add in its place the 6200. There should be a third white antenna wire to go along with the black and gray wires attached to the Realtek. There probably is a short bit of heat shrink tubing you can easily remove on this third white wire. WLAN cards will not work in the WWAN slot.

Well the 6200 card didn't work and was whitelisted. So much for my ebay purchase.
