x230 gsm WAN card, suspend power issue,

#1 Post by PRAGUEGUY » Wed Aug 07, 2013 3:10 am

Hi all, I have two issue with my laptop...
suspend: if I close the lid, the PC goes to some kind of suspend mode. Hibernation or suspend I do not know, indicated by stripe moon symbol, green led.
Problem is, if I put the NB in this state into my neoprene holder, in an hour it becomes so hot I cannot even hold it. It still has too much power output...this is bad even if I do not use the holder. Can anybody advise, how to set the power setting to create a suspend mode with less power output? it seems the heat cannot leave the case and it just goes red hot, I am worried of damaging the PC.

- I want to buy the optional GSM internal card. Does anybody know, if my GSM tariff supports that, will I also be able to write sms messages via the gsm sim card? what kind of GUI, utility will serve the GSM module? thanks

The power management driver http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloa ... D=DS032258

As for WWAN card for X230, there is Ericsson H5321gw (Part No. 0A36319) for EU region. You will very likely experience this issue as well http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-Th ... 071#M49816 You can write/receive SMS using Lenovo ThinkVantage Access Connections software.

thanks. I am really angry why Lenovo markets a faulty wan card for its product...or one not supported by a driver. I used the workaround via registry from the post above, and miraculously my wan card started working. But, I am dissatisfied...it is slower than using an attached mobile phone, be it attached via usb cable, or wifi for an android phone (using androids portable wifi hotspot feature). It is faster via attached mobile, using the same operator and data package...How come? I thought a card integrated like this will be faster...wanted to avoid the hassle with the mobile. this way, it is wasted money...any advice, how to make this faster? thanks.

You
In the workaround referenced in the previous quote, people experienced disconnections. I simply only could use the web a few seconds...

I can report excellent results...when I applied the registry tweak, in the link above, and set some very high numbers for send and transmit buffers, in wan card advaced settings( whatever they are), I get very good speeds. The card works. I have uninstalled Access Connections, and only control the connection via Windows connections status icon. It has a place were I had to write "internet" in the APN, Access Point Name field. And it works great for now.

Yep. I have spent 40+ hours to try to debug the disconnection issue and finally found the registry item published on the link  You should get better results with the modem than with a phone because the integrated antenna in display lid has much better reception. On the other hand with the bad 3G coverage in CZ, you will have 2G connection only in most places. The latest news is the coverage might improve after 2021

I am mostly in Prague. And even 2G is fine...for chatting and mails. I do not watch video via GSM.

Any idea what are the precise best settings for transmit and receive buffers?

I mean this...Image

Is there any user manual, datasheet for this horrible wan card? thanks

The issue with 2G/EDGE in middle-of-nowhere places is not the limited speed 236 kb/s but excessive latency over 3000 ms. It makes it useless for almost everything. The 3G coverage is very poor and all these oligopoly cz operators has stopped to expand the 3G network late in 2011. Now they are preparing for LTE where the coverage should be finisned in 2021. Between 2013 and 2021 there is ... yes, 2G/EDGE only.

Outside Prague there is nothing to do...with or without internet. Only to do tourism, and go for ghetto watching safari...so, why would anybody build 3G network. I am happy this way.
