X230 Display Issue

Can someone help. I have a X230 and have a display problem. I was using in its flat tablet form in a meeting and at the end shut the device down, flipped the screen back around to its laptop form and packed away. Today on booting up the screen is blank and has no display. I have tried connecting to an external monitor and can get display on the monitor screen but only when the lid is closed. I have tried changing between projector and think pad screen mode but to no avail. I'd there a setting somewhere I need to change or has the device become faulty ?? Any help would be appreciated. Thankyou.
