Win 7 Pro not available on X230?

#1 Post by kevinc » Thu Nov 28, 2013 2:44 pm

I'm reviewing available configurations of the X230 and X240 and noted that, at least today, there's no option to get Win 7 Pro on the X230. Does anyone know if that is a permanent change? Why?
Thanks

Typical. Once Windows 8 was released, every new Windows box gets Win 8.

Any machine purchased with Windows 8 Pro would include downgrade rights to Windows 7 Pro. You could just get a disc and do it yourself, though you'd lose the recovery partition.

I'd lose the recovery partition and all the Lenovo software and drivers.
How do downgrade rights" work? How do I get a copy of Win 7 to install?

That wouldn't surprise me...but Win 8 has been out for a while and as recently as a week or two ago they were offering Win 7 Home Premium, Win 7 Professional or Win 8 Professional. Now they've dropped Win 7 Professional but are still offering a choice between the other two.

I just reviewed the Downgrade Rights information on the MS site. Lenovo is offering Win 8 on the X230, not Win 8 Professional. Win 8 is not eligible for downgrade rights.

Couldn't you get away with W7 Home Premium?

For $1,200 I shouldn't have to compromise on an OS. If the X230 is supposed to be targeting the business user Win 7 Pro should be an option. That does not seem to be the case. Maybe I'll look for a reseller who has what I want.

No argument from me on that one.

I'm pretty certain you can do better than $1200 as well, although I don't know what exact configuration you're after....

Good luck.
