Upgrade Display on X240?
Re: Upgrade Display on X240?
Re: Upgrade Display on X240?
Gather children, and listen to my tale of woe...I found a supplier but they quote LP125WF2(SP)(B1), not LP125WF2(SP)(B2) - and make me sure that they are identical - how do you think is it true?
First order off of ebay was supposed to be the non-touch screen... it wasn't. You can immediately tell because the larger frame around the screen, the lenovo label on the glass, and the hole for the webcam.
Second order I gave up on the 1080p panel and just got the 1366x768 panel that specifically said it was the IPS screen from LG Displays. Guess what: TN panel from AUO.
So now, I have this coming on the slow boat from China: http://www.ebay.com/itm/221602178252
Is it the right one? I have no idea. The pictures look right, and he says that's the shipping part, but the label does say (B1), not (B2) and the FRU is 04X3922.
I'm not even sure what screens are options any more. Here's all possible screens, according to the parts listing:
04X0324 N FRU for AUO 12.5"HD AG LCD panel - Primary
04X0325 N FRU for LGD 12.5"HD AG LCD panel - Secondary
04X0433 N FRU for IVO 12.5"HD AG LCD panel - Secondary
04X0437 N FRU for LGD 12.5"HD/IPS AG LCD
04X1765 N FRU for BOE 12.5"HD AG panel for Rogue-2. BOE MODEL HB125WX1-200
04X3922 N LGD 12.5"IPS FHD LED backlight LCD panel with touch for Stella model.LGD LP125WF2-SPB1
04X3935 N FRULCD<GUNZE+ PCB <ELAN>
04X5024 N Rogue-2FRU LCD TPS ASM <JTOUCH> + PCB<ELAN>
04X5351 N Rogue-2/Wolverine-1 FRU LCD TPS ASM < JTOUCH >+ PCB < ELAN > - Primary
04X5352 N Rogue-2/Wolverine-1 FRU LCD TPS ASM < GUNZE >+ PCB < ELAN > - Secondary
Obviously FRU 04X3922 is touch screen, but why does it look right in the pictures? Can you peel the touch digitizer off the screen and be left with a regular screen? I was so tempted to do this with the first screen, but destroying ~150 dollars had me scared.

Re: Upgrade Display on X240?
Thank you for all of this info! Has your screen arrived yet?
Am interested to know how you get on as I'd like to do the same.

Re: Upgrade Display on X240?
I've not done very well. The screen was exactly as described and fits great. But it had no signs of life on bootup. The only way I got light out of it was by putting the laptop to sleep, exchanging screens, then waking it up. In that case I got a tiled 1366x768 desktop on the 1920x1080 display with video artifacts on the sides. It couldn't detect the correct resolution. On reboot, screen was dead again.
Here's the kicker: I put the TN display back in, and there's no backlight. You can see the screen on there in bright light, you can try to increase brightness, but no effect.
Thankfully Lenovo did a warranty repair, replaced motherboard, screen and who knows what else (ended up with an i7 instead of the original i5). Can you guess what I did? Yes I tried it again. Same result.
At this point, I don't know. I don't know if the 1080p screen fries the video-out somehow. I don't know if it just can't support the 1080p with its current firmware. I probably can get Lenovo to do another repair if I play dumb. A local computer shop claims that the 1080p would screw it up--he also did not have a way to test the 1080p separately. Maybe there's more power draw from IPS vs TN? Sorry I don't have a lot of hope for you. Has anyone sucessfully upgraded from TN to IPS on a thinkpad of this generation?

Thank you! I'm sorry to hear that you've had so many issues!
The eBay comment in German on that seller raised my hopes, but hearing your issues, I'm glad I didn't bite the bullet and go for it!

Re: Upgrade Display on X240?
I believe username doubledown on this forum was able to go from TN to a 1080p IPS on an x240s... could be that I got a bad panel from China. If you have success, please share!
Re: Upgrade Display on X240?
I recently ordered this one:
http://www.aliexpress.com/item//32251398888.html
Arrived today, works great! This is sooo much better than the original screen.
Thanks to the people starting this thread for sharing the idea of changing the screen!
e: I had the TN before.

Another success story.
I've got the same LCD as andyj. The label is identical to the listed one: LP125WF2 (SP)(B1), FRU 04X3922.
My X240 machine type is 20AMS0S900, TN 1366x768.

Re: Upgrade Display on X240?
Really glad it work for ya'll. I got my supplier to send another screen and I'm going to try switch them tonight.
Just to make sure I don't screw this up, how exactly did you do it? The way I've done it is:
1. Remove the external battery
2. Boot into bios to disable internal battery
3. Pull off the bezel
4. Flip the screen down onto the keyboard to get to the LCD connector
5. Pull up the tape and slide the connector backward
My biggest concern is that little connector and its thin and flimsy wire. Also, am I right in thinking you don't have to anything else off like the back cover? I don't see why you need to because the wire is right there.

Re: Upgrade Display on X240?
Correct. The bezel assembly with the lid attached may be tricky, though.
Re: Upgrade Display on X240?
It worked! Finally! Screen looks great!
Re: Upgrade Display on X240?
Okay it has a some image retention but I'll take it.
Re: Upgrade Display on X240?
For posterity, my X240 machine type is 20AMS0KY00 and the screen that worked was FRU 04X3922, just like t3hwx9.
I recommend my supplier, user chengtuoyuan on ebay. He sent me a another new screen without a hassle and without having to ship the first one all the way back to China. Even though there's a little image retention, I know that's been an issue with these panels, and it's not bad at all. The improvement over TN is night and day. Thanks for everyone's help.

Re: Upgrade Display on X240?
Another happy customer here!
I took the plunge and bought the screen from the ebay seller AndyJ used (chengtuoyuan).
I replaced the screen following the official manual, but probably could have done it without taking the bottom off and disconnecting the screen wires. You should just be able to peel the bezel off from the bottom right.
I'd definitely recommend it. The sharpness, deep blacks and much improved viewing angles are well worth it.
Was around £79 and took a week to ship to me in the UK. FRU 04X3922 and my X240 machine type is 20AMA0SE00.
This completes my upgrades -
Transcend 256GB m.2 SATA 3 SSD for the OS - http://www.amazon.de/Transcend-MTS400-M ... +transcend
and a 2TB WD 2.5" SATA drive for main storage.
Thanks guys!

Nice job jimbojones!
I have a new motto:
"Friends don't let friends look at crappy TN panels."
Just curious, are people using native scaling at 1080p or going up a bit. I'm using 125% on windows 7.

Re: Upgrade Display on X240?
I'm actually using 150% at the moment. Windows 8.1 doesn't seem to handle scaling amazingly well for everything, a lot of dialog boxes etc are blurry. I'm sure they'll fix it for Windows 10 though.

Re: Upgrade Display on X240?
Seems like you're right, doubledown (unfortunately..)
I didn't know the difference between the two and didn't complain as I was very happy about the working screen. Now it's too late, I guess.
Indeed, there is some very significant image retention around the edges -- can be pretty annoying from time to time.
I guess I just wait until I come across a touch panel assembly before I switch screens again...

Re: Upgrade Display on X240?
So which one is the fhd touch display for the x240? Is it LP125WF2(SP)(B1) or LP125WF2(SP)(B2)? I cant seem to find the definitive, correct answer anywhere.
Re: Upgrade Display on X240?
I don't think there is an answer. B1 is usually touch and B2 is usually non-touch. But my panel happened to be B1 and non-touch. My guess is that the touch digitizer was never bonded to my panel, leaving just the display. You have to look at the pictures to really tell what people are selling.
From the LG product datasheet:
The LP125WF2 is a Color Active Matrix Liquid Crystal Display with an integral LED backlight system and
Touch Screen Panel. The matrix employs a-Si Thin Film Transistor as the active element. It is a
transmissive type display operating in the normally black mode. This TFT-LCD has 12.5 inches diagonally
measured active display area with Full HD resolution (1920 horizontal by 1080 vertical pixel array). Each
pixel is divided into Red, Green and Blue sub-pixels or dots which are arranged in vertical stripes. Gray
scale or the brightness of the sub-pixel color is determined with a 6-bit gray scale signal for each dot, thus,
presenting a palette of more than 262,144 colors. The LP125WF2 has been designed to apply the interface
method that enables low power, high speed, low EMI. The LP125WF2 is intended to support applications
where thin thickness, low power are critical factors and graphic displays are important. In combination with
the vertical arrangement of the sub-pixels, the LP125WF2 characteristics provide an excellent flat display.
LP125WF2 is the Touch total solution’ model. It means it includes LCM & TSP all. (TSP is assembled by a
‘Direct Bonding’ method)

Re: Upgrade Display on X240?
So, would a b2 with touch digitizer work? It says that the b1 is for x240s stella model (whatever that is). I'm thoroughly confused.
Re: Upgrade Display on X240?
If the b2 truly has a touch digitizer, then no. But if it's just the panel, it should work. What do the pictures look like?
x240s is an asian version of the x240 that is especially light. More carbon fiber, no docking port, etc. I think it's also the only x240 that has a non-touch 1080p IPS display as an build-to-order option. In any case, ya gotta look at the pictures to know what's what.

Came across this late congrats on the upgrades
Just something to note.
I would disconnect the internal battery when swapping screens
As there is a chance you will blow the motherboard fuse.
Resulting in no back light as has been previously noted..

Re: Upgrade Display on X240?
Hiya, I ordered a LP125 (WF2) (B2) which had the FRU 00HM745 on it from one of the links mentioned on this thread, and it seemed to be the appropriate upgrade: 1920x1080 FHD non-touch screen to replace the lower-resolution IPS screen. The model I replaced the screen on is a 20AMS3WS02.
The screen looked like it would fit right, but the clearance was very tight, and ended up getting the help of a technician who had to cut off some of the plastic feet near the bottom of the bezel and use some strong double-sided tape to keep that part of the display intact and get the bezel to actually snap back on.
The screen itself is recognized fine and all's well so far. However, is there a different bezel that should be ordered? I looked at the BOM and the front bezel that came with the system is a FRU 04X5360. Otherwise, I'm wondering how some folk ordered the correct screen *and* were easily able to get it to fit with the 04X5360 front bezel?

Hi Guys,
I tried to order the FHD screen from the ebay user chengtuoyuan and I just want to let everyone know that he only has the screen with the touch digitizer now.

Thanks to all of you for your helpful posts!
Did someone manage to install a FHD Panel with touch? Is it possible to connect it to my "normal" Mainboard? What else do I have to buy except the screen bezel?

Re: Upgrade Display on X240?
Just ordered this screen on AliExpress to replace my stock non-touch 1366x768 screen. I'll let you know if it's any good.
Update: it works. It's a LP125WF2(SP)(B2) screen, I think the FRU was 00HM745 (took a picture of it but it's too blurry). Like the old screen, it gets very bright and has some image retention as well. But I love the high def resolution.

Re: Upgrade Display on X240?
Update: screen has gotten more and more image retention up to the point where it's now nearly unusable. Switched back to the old screen.

Hi, sorry for resuming this post.
I have a thinkpad x220 model 20AMS7E100 with standard TN panel.
Is it the IPS panel with FRU 04X3922 suitable for my laptop?
Thanks in advance.
