x240 Ugrades, Keyboard/Screen/Ram...

#1 Post by unit80 » Tue May 13, 2014 6:33 pm

Hello all, i was just going to buy an x240 when i thought of asking the community some questions. Im planning to keep this machine for a while hopefully and i had a few questions. What is not upgradable on this machine? Im looking to get the base version of this laptop. I believe i read on here that the screen can be upgraded to a full hd ips panel but does anyone know whether thats upgrading from a TN panel or lower res IPS panel. I know that RAM and can also be upgraded. Does anyone know the SSD limitations on this machine though. Ive seen some with a 240 GB ssd but never with 500gb ssd. Will this take a 500gb ssd? And can the regular keyboard be switched out with a backlit keyboard? Thanks all

I just upgraded an X240s (very similar to X240) and did all the upgrades you want to do.

I went from 1366x768 TN to 1080p (non-touch) IPS (FRU:00HM111 - there's one on Amazon for 160USD)
I went from Japanese non backlit keyboard to US backlit keyboard
I went from mechanical HDD to 250GB SSD (higher capacities should work as long as they're sata3)
My ThinkPads:
Current: X201s, X240s, ThinkCentre M93p Tiny
Previous: TransNote (right-handed), 701C, 560x, S30 i-Series, T40, T42p, T43, X60T, X200s, X301, X1 Carbon (1st Gen), X240, Helix (2nd Gen w/ Ultrabook Pro keyboard), X230s
