X240 OSD & Speaker Mute

I recently acquired an X240. I normally have the speakers muted, and I have noticed that every time any sound occurs, the OSD appears to tell me the speakers are muted. So, every time I get an email, or cause any sort of system beep - the OSD appears for a second to tell me it is muted. Very annoying! I've had many Thinkpads over the years, and I have never previously seen this behavior. Is this some sort of "feature" that can be disabled??
