x250 BIOS update - says it now officially supports 16GB RAM
x250 BIOS update - says it now officially supports 16GB RAM
http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/product ... s/ds102288
So, now 16GB is officially supported. I'm wondering what that means - can I get any old 16GB sodimm module and put it in there? I know there are some intelligent 16GB sticks that are PC1333, but I'm wondering if I can get a stick that's PC1600.

If I'm not mistaken, 1600MHz modules do not work on Broadwell Laptops. They work fine on AMD machines though.

Re: x250 BIOS update - says it now officially supports 16GB RAM
Perhaps Lenovo will add a second memory slot in the x260 (like they HAD in the x230)?
These 16GB modules are terribly expensive---and to pay that much just to have single channel memory is ridiculous.

Crucial shows DDR3-1600 (PC3-12800) and DDR3-1866 (PC3-14900) modules if you search for Thinkpad X250 memory.600X wrote:If I'm not mistaken, 1600MHz modules do not work on Broadwell Laptops. They work fine on AMD machines though.

I wouldn't count on that turn of events what-so-ever...I mean, they started soldering the RAM on T series which has never been the case in the past...prior to *40 generation, that is.mschaffer wrote:Perhaps Lenovo will add a second memory slot in the x260 (like they HAD in the x230)?

Re: x250 BIOS update - says it now officially supports 16GB RAM
Yeah, you can´t count on it of course. But, taking in that Lenovo went back with the T450 to having 2 RAM slots, compared with the T440, and also said they would listen more closely to customer feedback (which was the case with the 2 DIMM slots of the T450, the return of the TrackPoint buttons and the discontinuation of the Adaptive Keyboard on the X1 Carbon), I would say that there is a chance that Lenovo might go back to having 2 DIMM slots with the X260 as well - we will see in a few months I guess...ajkula66 wrote:I wouldn't count on that turn of events what-so-ever...I mean, they started soldering the RAM on T series which has never been the case in the past...prior to *40 generation, that is.
Also, this: http://abload.de/img/x2501runc.png (note: The word "still" was marked by me)
It sounds to me like they are aware of the issue.
8 GB modules were also very expensive when they first came out, today they are pretty affordable. I think the same will happen with 16 GB modules in due time.mschaffer wrote:These 16GB modules are terribly expensive---and to pay that much just to have single channel memory is ridiculous.

Although since we're starting to move to DDR4 memory prices on DDR3 may stop dropping significantly as memory manufacturers shift their production to the new standard.Ibthink wrote: 8 GB modules were also very expensive when they first came out, today they are pretty affordable. Re: x250 BIOS update - says it now officially supports 16GB RAM
OK- I know the original input is quite old, but have followed the link to the Lenovo Bios update and I cannot for the life of me see anywhere that it says that this Bios update allows the support of 16 gb of ram.
Can someone or the person who posted the link please confirm that 16 gb is acceptable on a 5 Gen X250 please?
If it has been successfully tested with 16 gb Ram, could they supply the Ram spec also please?
Many Thanks

Better still, I can sell you a stick or two of the same model as above, if you want it.

Oh lord, how the time passes -- I do not have that stick anymore (it's been over three years!), but they are probably still on Amazon and I will probably be buying some.
Out of curiosity, Sweden does not have the Amazon site?
Wish you good health and best to your adventures with X250.

Re: x250 BIOS update - says it now officially supports 16GB RAM
Now .. this is interesting. I am keenly wondering if I should trade out my X250 for a T450, or have both -- simply for the extra potential 16GB (32GB total) of RAM (my usage of VMs is never ending). Bonus points if this far in the T-series they had the CD/DVD drive built onto the machine + if I ever find one sold with the dock (which I could use on both machines). Of course, then I have to ask questions like will I have three daily drivers, or will one be purely as an emergency backup(?)). I guess time and how many more system boards I manage to brick during a BIOS upgrade (ahaha) will tell!
I had better hope you are right, because otherwise getting a couple more sticks + possibly one more...Ibthink wrote: ↑Mon Jun 22, 2015 2:10 pm8 GB modules were also very expensive when they first came out, today they are pretty affordable. ... will not be a very economical endeavor, not to mention whatever a T450 will go for these days.
I shall have to keep a close eye on this forum, and elsewhere, to see what options arise...
At least I know what my next Thinkpad will likely be, unless a very economical PowerPC 820/850 pops up again...

Re: x250 BIOS update - says it now officially supports 16GB RAM
If RAM is very important for you, I would advise you to buy at least a T470 - because that one supports DDR4, which means it can take in up to 64 GB of RAM - 32 GB RAM modules became available with DDR4.
Or, if you like the 12 inch size better, a X260 - because that one also has DDR4 and can take in up to 32 GB with the single SO-DIMM.

The X260 likely would have been my choice as well, butIbthink wrote: ↑Fri Jun 18, 2021 8:37 amIf RAM is very important for you, I would advise you to buy at least a T470 - because that one supports DDR4, which means it can take in up to 64 GB of RAM - 32 GB RAM modules became available with DDR4.

- I have an ASUS ROG computer hidden away in storage somewhere that takes 64GB of RAM and used to run as a server (it was rather capable).
- I really want to make use of the option to put a "small" (read -- I've done this with 1TB and look forwards to trying with 2TB soon) SSD on the smartcard connector, and many have told me this was only an option in the X/T ~40/~50 generation machines. X260 onwards the smartcard connector looks very different and there is unfortunately no place for more m.2 2242 SSDs to fit.
Regardless, I do appreciate your kind advice.
