How do you differentiate hibernation from shutdown?

Is "fast startup" enabled?

Run powercfg -a from the command prompt. Does it mention Hibernation anywhere?

Does shutdown /h hibernate the machine?

That's a pickle.

What about hibernation in safe mode?

Also, did you check the Minidump folder under the Windows folder to see if any crashes have been logged there? Sometimes a driver issue can cause the PC to crash when it attempting to change power state.
