Mysteries of the X240s

#1 Post by Edward Mendelson » Sun Jul 23, 2017 7:02 pm

This continues a thread that I started in another forum about a slightly mysterious X240s that I bought recently:

viewtopic.php?f=31&t=124263

To recap, the BIOS and label say that the machine's type number is 1234567, which seemed unlikely. RealBlackStuff suggested that it might be a prototype unit or one that belonged to someone at Lenovo or Foxconn Wistron, which makes sense. RBS also pointed me to the FRU parts list, which includes something puzzling, or at least puzzling to me.

The listing of keyboard bezels looks like this:
04X0756 N Keyboard Bezel ASM w/o FP
04X3819 N Keyboard Bezel ASM w/Light guide, w/ FP for NFC
04X3820 N Keyboard Bezel ASM w/o FP for NFC
04X3911 N Keyboard Bezel ASM w/ Light guide, w/ FP
I understand that FP means fingerprint reader and NFC means Near Field Communications - but what does "Light guide" mean?

The same maybe as this?

Let the Light Guide You

Yoga 370 comes with a white backlight keyboard. When you’re the last one in the office or finishing that presentation on the red-eye, you can still get the job done.

I wondered about that. But does it mean that the option to use a backlit keyboard has something to do with the bezel with the "guide light"?

The X240s and the X240 both have an option to use backlit keyboards, but I don't see anything in the X240 FRU list that corresponds to the "guide light" in the X240s. Here's the X240 list:

A puzzle still? (I certainly hope the backlit keyboard doesn't require a different bezel - there's nothing in the HMM that suggests this...)

Meanwhile, I found this list of models on a Chinese site. I'm not sure what a "nuclear display" means. Maybe it refers to the touchscreen model?

Some TPs now have a LED above the letter i in the Thinkpad badge.
Could that be it?

Could be! This may be a mystery that goes down in history as forever unsolved, but I've been looking into part numbers and will report if I find anything.
