x230 spontaneously freezing while entering sleep/shutdown/reset/hibernate

#1 Post by ilovelife » Tue Aug 22, 2017 8:30 am

While issuing the shutdown/reset/sleep/hibernate command from windows 7 or 10 the laptop spontaneously freezes and I have to take out the battery or keep the power button 10s pressed.
What I mean by freeze is that the screen goes blank but the processor is still running.
The interesting thing is that if I execute the hibernate command and the laptop freezes when force stop the laptop and turn it back on again it resumes the previous state windows was in before restarting it. So form windows point of view shutdown is executed but somewhere in the last step just before turning the processor of something goes wrong.
This behavior happens spontaneously, I have seen it happens most when using the laptop on battery for 1-2 hours and then executing a sleep.

I have tried deactivating all power saving options from windows power center and bios.
My BIOS version is 2.68
I suspect the bios version 2.67, 2.68 might be the problem since after upgrading to these versions the problems started to appear.

Did anyone else encounter these problem and have a solution ?
If not, does anyone know how to make a bios downgrade to 2.64, downloading the update from http://support.lenovo.com/ro/en/downloads/ds029187 I can not apply it (in bios I have allowed to flash older versions.

Thank you !

Welcome to the Forum.
Can you use Fn/F4?

See if this may help:

Thank you for the quick reply,

Yes, FN+F4 go to sleep combination is working but the laptop continues to freeze.

I have deactivated from BIOS Memory Protection and screen brightness is not applicable in windows 10, unfortunately the issue of freezing while entering shutdown/sleep/hibernate persists ALTHOUGH I do observe it to happen a lot less often then before.

Try booting from a Linux Live distro (external CD or USB) and check if it happens there as well.
Personally I'd suspect W10.

Exact same thing happened to me on Win 7. Upgraded to Win 10 and no problems, so probably the installation.
