X230 Unable to remove SSD

#1 Post by kevinc » Sat Oct 14, 2017 12:26 pm

I'm trying to upgrade the SDD in my x230. Looks like the prior owner replaced the original drive with an SSD but did not put the pull tab back in position. I'n not able to get a grip on the installed drive to remove it. Is the drive accessible from the top? Any suggestions from some of you ThinkPad Whisperers?
Thanks

If you remove the keyboard you can see the HD/SSD through the chassis.
That should give you more access to it.

It worked. I removed the keyboard and was able to slowly work the drive out from above. The prior owner installed an SSD but did not install the drive tray...so there wasn't any pull tab, which I assume would have been attached to the tray. All's well for now. I'll try to rack down a tray to make life a little easier for the next guy.
Thanks for your help...
Cheers!

Other options that can work to remove a drive inserted without caddy is to bend a paperclip and insert it in one of the corner mounting screw holes on the drive, or put some parcel or masking tape on the drive (preferably on its main surface), then use the grip on that to pull the drive out.

I always used thin pliers; the drive is typically not so deep inside to be unable to reach it.
