Good to see you are choosing Crucial memory since this is part of Micron Technology subsidiary means guaranteed to work first try, and this Haswell processor supports up to 32GB in two modules means you can do this in one 16GB Cruical module on your notebook. Only problem is you'll be stuck with single channel and will not improve the integrated GPU performance compared to dual channel (two or four modules) computers in general. Lenovo is not willing to go dual slot memory in any X series for foreseeable time.

Just a note, running at 16GB will help with windows and any OSes generally.

Well 4th gen of iCore is limited to 8 GiG per stick, is it not? It seem so when you check i5-4300U in Intels ARK.

Confirmed, will not work. 8GB is all that will work in x240. Even newest x250, x270 and x280 is still one slot.

Intel Ark (referenced i5-4200u for info), 16GB max dependent on memory type. That it. Besides the dual channel that about it. I just found lenovo forums complaining about not able to do 16GB, just 8GB. That is all I can glean from that. Sell x240 and buy one of these notebooks many are available up to i7 and two memory slots. Even the newest x series is still 1 slot.

Best thing for 12.5" notebooks are with my preferred choices on M.2 slots over mPCIe.

HP EliteBook 820 G3 skylake 12.5" 2x memory slots DDR4, M.2 NVMe-SSD OR SATA (requires a 2.5" caddy).
HP Elitebook 820 G2 boardwell 12.5" 2x memory slots DDR3L, SATA. flash cache. trackpoint
HP Elitebook 820 G1 haswell 12.5" 2x memory slots DDR3L, SATA. flash cache. trackpoint
HP ProBook 430-G1 haswell 13.3" 2x memory slots, SATA.

Dell Latitude 12 E5250 haswell & boardwell 12.5" 2x memory slots DDR3L, SATA. 38wh with SATA.
Dell Latitude 12 E7270 skylake 12.5" 2x memory slots DDR4, M.2 SATA mode. 55wh
Dell Latitude 12 E5270 skylake 12.5" 2x DDR4, M.2 or SATA. 47wh with SATA or M.2 or 62wh with M.2 SSD only.

Ok, I'm closing the topic. I will stay at 8GB, but later I will buy x260 so I will have 16GB RAM there. Thanks for the answer ;D

Not to question your decision, why x260 like I already mentioned about lack of dual channel performance and limit of memory down the road again? Like going for 32GB?

Single 16GB stick will not work in your X240, the earliest the DDR3L 16GB would work is with Broadwell processors, and X240 are Haswells.
