X230 card reader stopped working

#1 Post by soulburner » Mon Jun 25, 2018 1:01 am

Hello :)

I have a problem with my X230 - a few weeks ago I noticed the card reader stopped working. It's not visible in Windows Device Manager at all. It's not disabled in the BIOS. Also tried booting Manjaro and Ubuntu live cd's and it's not detected there either. I know it used to work, because I copied lots of photos from several SD cards months ago...
I think it happened after I removed the WWAN card and installed an mSata SSD. Could I disconnect something by mistake?

Thanks for any tips!

Unless you hit something in the system board with a screwdriver, no. The card reader is not in a separate circuit board, so there's no cable that could get detached.

Welcome to the forum. :)

The card reader usually powers down and is invisible when not in use. I assume you tried to insert a card, and it did not get detected?

I've run across similar behavior before on my X220. See if the information in the following post is any help.

EDIT: On re-reading this thread, I am not sure you are having the same issue I've had, but it still may be worth checking out.

Thanks for the links, they're pretty informative, however I'm still unsuccessful.
I did dual boot between Windows and Ubuntu and I noticed a "base system driver" appeared in Device Manager (it wasn't there before I dual booted, but the reader didn't work anyway). Unfortunately, the tips provided in those threads did not help. When I changed the .inf file accordingly, now it appears as "Ricoh PCIe SD/MMC Host Controller" in Device Manager but says

Code: Select all

Windows cannot verify the digital signature for the drivers required for this device.
A recent hardware or software change might have installed a file that is signed incorrectly
or damaged, or that might be malicious software from an unknown source. (Code 52)
I'm using Windows 7 x64.

Lenovo System Update and "Automatic Driver Update" on Lenovo's website don't show the card reader (nor the fingerprint reader, which I reenabled in BIOS).

Any additional tips welcome :)

EDIT - I found the exact driver mentioned in another thread: " Ricoh PCIe SDXC/MMC Host Controller, by Ricoh Company, version 6.10.10.32, dated 25/05/2011.", ran setup.exe and it installed properly, but is now nowhere to be seen in Device Manager...

Read my first reply above. Did you actually try to plug in a card?

Yes, however it is slightly possible the only card I have at the moment could be dead. I'll try and find a different one and get back to you...
