I have been running my X230t with Windows 10 and I am honestly not impressed. I have much more experience with Windows 7 (I have a COA for it) but I'm worried about loss of touchscreen functionality.

Honest opinions from x230t owners only please, Is it better with 7 or 10?

Windows 10 is officially supported on X230.

Yeah I have it, but I feel like it's less functional than windows 7.

I've used both and besides preferring 7 in general...they both work just fine.

What are you not impressed with? Mine runs exceptionally well on 10 considering it's age.

What is so impressive about it's performance? A 6th-7th gen CPU from 2015-16 has the same performance as your X230...even if it is less efficient.

My case and point is personal data security, forced updates, and spyware. I am a writer, and I'd rather not have one of my upcoming books stolen by a Microsoft employee, and some of my sources would rather not have their personal information leaked. It is because of the security risks posed by Windows 10 that I haven't transferred any of my publication information off of my no network Windows 7 computer to my network enabled Windows 10.

Part of the reason I got my x230t was to be able to transition to a mobile platform that I can use for everything from drawing with a stylist to using network-enabled programs. Now I have actually lost any torrent functionality, even using my VPN with Windows 10 and every trick I have tried has made no difference. I am completely blocked from downloading through a magnet. Windows 7 had some spying features but is ultimately much better in regards to letting you do what you want to do without worrying about Big Brother.

In addition, can anyone say they really like the bubbly tablet layout of Windows 10? Do you always have a microphone on so that you can tell Cortana what you're looking for or do you have to type it in the start window box? Some of the apps like Xbox streaming are pretty cool, but they're not worth the bloatware or the lack of control you have over your own device. I've always been a big proponent of individual rights, and the fact that Microsoft gets away with all the intrusion should be considered unconstitutional, regardless of the EULA agreement.

That's another issue I see in the future with Windows 10. They marketed as being capable on any platform specs, but like any computer if you have a Celeron and 2 gigs of RAM it's not going to perform like an i7 with 16 gigs of RAM. They also like to tout that has such a small installation file size, but if they are intending on it being the last version of Windows forever, eventually the features updates will make the file size larger and reduce the overall amount of space you have for your personal files. It's not like they're going to offer you a drive clone to a 1 terabyte hard drive when the new standard becomes 10 TB MicroSD cards in the next 5 to 10 years.

So I'm officially downloading the Windows 7 Pro ISO file that should work with my COA that came with this computer. I will boot it's from the disc and test it out and see if it solves some of my issues with torrenting. Looking forward to letting everyone know the result.

If IBM made a graphic design and engineering typewriter, I'd be all over that!

Surely the answer is to avoid Microsoft altogether.

There is obviously a learning curve, but it's not huge, especially if you go for a Linux distro like Mint or Ubuntu, which are designed to be easy to use by non-geeks.

Not only will you be much more secure, but the computer will run faster and there will be no OS/app cost - ever.

Years ago there was no good alternative to Microsoft Office (whatever the Linux crowd said!). Now, however, LibreOffice is as good as MS Office in almost every way, and better in some. For instance it will read and write to any MS file format, which is more than MS Office will do.

Try it! You might like it.

I have a growing army of ancient Thinkpads, including a T42 with the 1400 x 1050 screen. It's superb for word-processing. Wide-screen computers are fine for watching movies, but hopeless for working on A4 documents.

Given the very low cost of old Thinkpads there is a lot to be said for having several, each dedicated to a particular task. I did pay real money for a nice T430 for serious work, but I also have an Edge 15 for browsing on the sofa, a T61 for music, and a couple of T42s for this and that. These all cost peanuts but work well with Linux. Now I am looking for something suitable to use in bed. Perhaps an X of some kind.

My idea behind the X230t is having a compact long battery life computer for deployment. It's nice because I can lie the screen flat as a tablet to watch movies or just leave it flip open. It has tons of entertainment value because I can draw with the stylus and create art, and having the 3 x 3 W LAN makes my internet connection so much better. Don't get me wrong I like some of the features of Windows 10 like having the Xbox play, but in reality that is why I also have a ssf desktop setup for gaming when I'm away from home

I use Scribus & Libreoffice on a 1400x1500 T60p and it great as you say for documents. These days unless your tied to MS Project/Office Macros there really is little business case for windows financially even factoring support in.

Arch Linux with GNOME runs fine on Wayland or Xorg with full pen support on a X230T & makes a great small drawing tablet, media player.

I too run Windows 10 on an X230t (tablet) and love it. Use it for both personal and business (software engineering) and performs very well especially considering the age.

I upgraded my X230t to 16GB memory and two SSDs (a SSD drive in the SATA slot, and another in the mSATA slot). And the touchscreen is super useful. Co-workers are jealous!

Recently Windows 10 forced an update that caused my X230t to slow down. Microsoft updated their anti-virus that collided with Avira anti-virus. I uninstalled Avira and all is well again!
