[DONE] [x240] about trackpad replacement
[DONE] [x240] about trackpad replacement
Hello
I'm very soon going to upgrade the trackpad from my x240. I get some questions due to some topics/links I read.
1/ How can I know if my current x240 model fits the same bezel size as the x250? (as it's written iin the user quote on this blog post http://diy.mironto.sk/thinkpad-x240-rep ... -keyboard/ ).
I got some output from command line but I can't find the manufactured date.
2/ Does linux natively support the new trackpad?
Thanks

Any X250 touchpad+buttons fits in the X240.
Make sure to get a Synaptics unit, check in the T430 section (T440/p Clunkpad etc.) at the top to see how.
Linux supports natively both Synaptics and Alps.

Re: [x240] about trackpad replacement
I saw many user posts saying that sometimes the x250 trackpad is too closed of the screen. If I don't need to cut off my bezel it seems good.
Anyway I've ordered it two weeks ago from a trusted chinese dealer, many review about his trackpad saying it's a good one. It looks like a synaptic but it's a little bit different, I'll post pictures once I get it, I hope soon

Re: [x240] about trackpad replacement
So, I've just received the trackpad I ordered two weeks ago. At the first view it looks a little bit different that the one from the T440/p trackpad instructions topic .
I bought it to a chinese seller on ebay, and I was pretty sure to get a working trackpad since many buyers have left some reviews about his own sales. I just took off the motherboard and the keyboard protection, removing the tape in order to disconnect the original clunchpad. After that I used a spudger in order to take off the clunchpad, and I did the same thing with the mechanical sub-clunchpad layer, without destroying it. The final touch has been connecting the cable to the new trackpad, paste back the trackpad with the glue from the original one, paste back the tape and the rest as usually (screws, keyboard protection, motherboard..).
Once it has all been done, just connect to the AC charger, set-up the date to the bios (since I had to disconnect the bios battery in order to take off the motherboard) and then it's all finished. I can finally use the trackpoint easily, this trackpad works like a charm, it's a new pleasure of using my lovely x240

The trackpad cost me 17$ + 10$ of delivery charges, it took two weeks to arrived in west europe.
EDIT: it works well on one tap, two fingers tap or even three fingers tap. Same for the 3 buttons that are really smooth. The texture is different from the clunchpad. The only settings to change is the sensitivity since the touch area is smaller than the clunchpad because of the three buttons.

Re: [x240] about trackpad replacement
From its looks, yours is a Synaptics touchpad.
The X240 itself even has different shape touchpad openings in the palmrest, depending on how 'old' the palmrest is.
(And the X240s is even more complicated.)
X240/X250 and T440/T450 have different touchpad measurements and ways of mounting.whqdz wrote: ↑Wed Feb 27, 2019 6:33 amAt the first view it looks a little bit different that the one from the T440/p trackpad instructions topic .

Re: [x240] about trackpad replacement
Thank you for this insight. I thought they were all looking like the same but with different sizes. It explains why I saw some differences with others synaptic trackpads (around blue/red keys and 2/3 holes).
I will post pictures of the original clunchpad in order to show how it looks like. I don't know if it's a new or old one. It can be interesting for people since most of the topics I read were talking about destructive step in order to take off the mechanical layer of the clunchpad. In fact we don't have to destroy the clunchpad sub-layer if we take it off from the side that is close to the screen and the keyboard and with a spudger.
Unfortunately I haven't be able to take pictures of the whole process since I went out of battery.

Sorry for the huge mistake
