X230 with Win 7, no USB drivers

#1 Post by AlanHK » Sat Apr 20, 2019 2:31 pm

I just bought an X230. It came with a new generic install of Win7.
Wifi works, ethernet works.
Sound didn't work so I got the Realtek drivers from Lenovo, and that mostly works, though it has randomly stopped working a few times and needs to be de/re-activated to get sound again.

But apparently no USB devices work, on any of the 3 ports. It detects the device, then just says "installation failed", for both thumb drive and USB keyboard.

I got the Lenovo "Update and Drivers". It had a bunch of "critical" things it wanted to install, so I did that. Then when it rebooted, the system failed to boot and had to go back to a restore point, fortunately that seems no worse than before.
Rerunning the Lenovo update again, it now says nothing to install. I don't know if it really checked if its previous run worked, or is just using its record that it did it.
Tried the "Lenovo Solution Center", seems pretty useless and has nothing about either USB or drivers.

I went to Device Manager and uninstalled all the USB controllers, then did a "scan for hardware changes", which is what I do on my desktop PC when some of its USB ports get stupid. But now the TP shows 3 USB controllers with yellow !, and if I open them, "no drivers installed" and if I try "Update", it fails to find any.
-- There is one USB 3 port, and I installed the Lenovo/Intel driver for that. However, nothing I plug into it is detected.

Do I need a special Lenovo driver, or is this a purely MS problem? I don't have the Win install media, I will go back to the vendor for it, but that will take several days.
Any other way to resolve this?
Can someone running Win7 on this or a similar TP look at the Device Manager and tell me what the drivers are?

You need to install the Intel USB3 drivers for your controller. Win7 does not have them built-in. You can download them from Lenovo website.

I already have, as you can see in the screenshot, the last section.
Didn't help. Perhaps they require the "normal" USB drivers as well.
The 2 USB2 ports recognise a device has been inserted, but have no drivers.
The USB3 port ignores anything I put in it.

If you have a similar machine, please tell me what drivers it is using.

Upon further inspection, it looks like there are no drivers for the USB2 component of the USB3 controller. Possibly the driver is not correctly installed.

I have a T430s, but it's running Win10, which has all the necessary drivers in-box, so I'm not sure I could provide helpful information through that.

FWIW - the X230 has 2 USB3 ports, and one USB2 port (powered, marked yellow).

Thanks, tells me these are MS drivers, as I expected. Don't know why they aren't on my install, which was also W7-Pro/SP1, but generic.

Hopefully I can get them from the vendor's installer when I get a copy of it next week.

You are looking at it wrong. The USB Hub is always a Microsoft driver, but what you should care about is this:
