ultrabay supper slim battery for x230 - as a power bridge

#1 Post by dienhasg » Tue Aug 20, 2019 7:35 pm

requirements:

1. Three flat Lithium battery 3.7 voltare

2. Battery management circuit compatible with x230

Doing:

- Put all to HDD bay

- figure out which pins on the docking connector correspond to the battery pack's positive and negative terminals and data channel (for the battery management circuit), then solder wires (thick ones for the +/- terminals and thinner ones for battery data) to connect them to the pack in the HDD bay.
hello everybody,

some guys instruct me modding a power bridge for x230 as above. He also told me to look for the x230t-battery-managerment-circuit then testing whether it fix to HDD bay. Is there anyone had the dimention of that thing? I want to DIY, so any advices is welcome so much.

again, thank you for all your information.

I am guessing what you are trying to do is add a small battery in the 2.5" slot wired over the docking port?

Should work in theory, might want to check out the X230 schematics and a slice battery.

Well, this is tricky. Especially having in mind you're sacrificing the only reasonable storage option. While SATA port in X230 works in SATA-3, mSata will work at SATA-2 speeds only.

I think the suggestion about using the X230T battery is that it has those flat Li-Ion cells, which might be able to fit in the HDD bay. The big question is the size of the battery management board-- while I don't have and X230T, I have the much-older X61T and dismantled two of its battery packs. IIRC the circuit board was narrow (well below 1 inch) and long (more than 4 inches). This seems to be the case with most of the batteries that I've disassembled.

IMO it's very likely that this particular approach (X230T battery) is dead in the water.

OTOH, the Ultrabay battery itself looks promising:

Using much smaller Li-ion cells may be possible, but the issue now is how to reprogram the battery management system to reflect the reduced capacity.
