Running X230 off ultrabase only

#1 Post by betularia » Wed Oct 16, 2019 11:55 pm

Although I appreciate X230's portability, most of the time I work plug it to the wall, so that greatly degrades the battery. So I am thinking about getting an Ultrabase dock.

My question to you guys... Can I detach the battery and power my laptop directly from the ultrabase dock? Are there any concerns?

If you use a 90W charger, you can remove your battery without losing anything.
No need to buy a dock.

This is my first time hearing about the 90W charger. So based on what you said, I looked it up on other threads but I cannot find a conclusive answer, because it seems the 65W will work just fine.

Based on your experience, what kind of issues will I run into if I simply use the 65W adapter on the ultrabase with a battery-less X230?

With 65W and no battery, the CPU will be throttled if you run a heavy load.
The 90W takes care of that.

I use a 90w charger with my X220 with no battery. I get full clock speed without any issues. :D
The X230 will behave the same way.

As was pointed out, Ultrabase or no Ultrabase has nothing to do with running without a battery. You can run just on AC without battery whether you have a dock or not.

Still, these are all clumsy solutions. All you will have achieved is two things:
1. Your laptop will lose power if there is a short power outage
2. Once in a blue moon where you actually need your battery you will find that it has lost most of its charge while in storage and is basically useless

So you say - OK, I will take it out and charge it once in a while, or I will plan ahead when I need it. These are also bad ideas because you will forget or you'll have to constantly worry about things that normal people don't have to worry about.

Running a laptop without a battery is, plain and simple, a silly idea. If you are so worried about battery longevity, set it to stop charging at 90% and not 100%.

I tried to run my X220 on Dock without battery -- it can be done, but the computer runs slow, in case of the X220 it became noticeable laggy.

I suppose this has to do with the fact that with external Display, and all the possibilities of hooking up power-consuming things on the dock, there will be a real possibility of the standard power supply will be unable to to supply enough power -- so the computer goes to a lower-power mode just to make sure it won't fail (just a guess, but at least that is what I am telling myself.)

So yes, you can drive your Thinkpad off dock without battery even with a standard charger, but it is going to run much slower.
