Lenovo Mobile Broadband Activation

#1 Post by Jake.Werecat » Sun Jan 26, 2020 4:25 pm

Hi Guys,
I just installed Lenovo Update & Driver software and ran the scan. Besides updating two or three drivers, something new popped up - "Lenovo Mobile Broadband Activation".
I'm using a 3G modem (H5321) with SIM card inserted on daily bases for years. Of course I have the WWAN driver installed since installing windows, I also use the Lenovo Access Connection applet. So what is the 3rd WWAN-raleted crap?
Just of curiosity, I let it install itself. Here comes to funny part. It added an icon in the sys-tray, and after clicking it, a tiny windows popped-up with an info "mobile broadband card not found", with no additional options available. Meanwhile the WWAN card is working all fine, I'm connected to internet using it. So why is this app used for? And why isn't it working? Where's the catch?
A description from Lenovo does not help a bit:
WHAT THIS PACKAGE DOES

Lenovo Mobile Broadband Activation is an application for ThinkPad systems
to support mobile broadband (3G/4G) activation for various service providers
with systems containing one of the following devices.

Suffice it to say that we always uninstall the "Lenovo Mobile Broadband Activation".

Whilst our own X230 did not have Mobile Broadband (WWAN), we do have similar Mobile Broadband cards in our T410 / X1C3 / X1C4.
So this is from actual experience!
Daily Driver: (X1E3) X1 Extreme 3rd Gen | mobile broadband (WWAN)
Current Thinkpads: X1E3 | X1E1 | X1C10 | X1C9 | X1C4 | X1C3 | X230
Retired Thinkpads: X250 | T410 | T42 | 560 (circa 1996)

Well, I'm not using it either, and was surprised with its existence, thus was wondering what's it used for.
