x230 aftermarket battery catch-22?

#1 Post by MsTerra » Mon Feb 24, 2020 1:31 pm

I have an x230 laptop with no battery. I want to update the old bios in that machine, and install the EC patch to use an aftermarket Kingsner battery.

When I get the aftermarket battery and put it in the laptop, with presumably some amount of charge already in it, can I then use that to upgrade the bios and instal the EC mod patch and charge and use that battery.

Right now when I try to upgrade the bios with no battery in the machine, I can an error message that the bios cannot be upgraded without a battery in the laptop.

This may be a catch-22 situation where the laptop needs a battery to install the bios and EC mod patch, and the bios upgrade and EC mod patch won't install with a charged battery.

And no, I can't find another Lenovo battery to use in this in order to accomplish the above. I'll have to use the aftermarket one when it arrives.

Does anyone have experience upgrading the x230 bios and then installing the EC patch with only an aftermarket battery in the machine?

Just stick that new battery in and hope it has enough charge to update your BIOS.
If not, find someone with an X220 and charge the battery in there.
Do NOT upgrade to a newer BIOS than this: 2.73/1.14

Scroll down to find the older VERSIONS.

Run your EC-mod

Now for the good stuff:
Run Ivyprep \
Run 1vyrain / as found in the T430-T490 forum: viewforum.php?f=68
These last two will remove the wifi-whitelist and add a few more goodies.
Highly recommended, and make sure to read both threads first!
