Chinese X230 Upgrade Help

#1 Post by MarathonBob » Fri Feb 28, 2020 2:08 am

Hi, everyone! First post here.

About a year ago I was looking for an older, cheap and reliable ThinkPad to use at work. I had an X220 or X230 in mind when I came across a local listing for a Lenovo Zhaoyang K29 for next to nothing. After looking at the specs and doing a bit of research, it's basically a Chinese business model similar to the X230, with an older style keyboard and no finger pointer. It even has a fingerprint scanner and the old keyboard lamp.

I upgraded the display to IPS, RAM from 4GB to 8GB, HDD to SSD. My question is:
Does anybody know if the network card can be upgraded? The connection is pretty bad at work compared to my phone and other newer devices. It has a mini PCIe half - Centrino Wireless-N 2230. Would like to upgrade to AC. Any help is much appreciated!

K29 even has a real HDMI port (missing on X230).
You can D/L the Userguide here: https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobi ... _ug_en.pdf
No idea if that K29 has a wifi-whitelist or not, just try any non-lenovo wifi-card and see if you get Error 1802.
If not, AC-7260 is your best friend!
Lovely day for a Guinness! (the Real Black Stuff). And pigs CAN fly!

If an AC-7260 comes my way I'll give it a go. I might just opt for a USB WiFi adapter. Looking at the Dlink DWA-181 for its small form factor.
