mini displayport not working

#1 Post by Ianski » Wed May 13, 2020 11:11 pm

Now that I have my X230 working properly (I posted a couple of months ago about its faulty wireless card, now replaced) and a fresh, fully updated install of Windows 10 on it, I decided to buy a cable to convert DisplayPort output to HDMI so I can connect it up to a television. But, I can't seem to get it to work. I downloaded and installed the latest Intel 4000 graphics driver. I installed Lenovo's Vantage software and updated all the drivers in the machine. The televisions I tried stubbornly display "no signal", and no amount of extending or duplicating the display helps. Both televisions are older Samsung models. And I'm able to successfully connect my T520's displayport to them (using a different adapter, it has a full sized displayport). The T520, however, is running Windows 7.

The specs of the adapter are:
Support Mini DisplayPort 1.1a input and HDMI1.3b output
Support HDMI highest video resolution 1080p.Support HDMI 225MHz/2.25Gbps per channel (6.75Gbps all channel) bandwidth
Support HDMI 12bit per channel (36bit all channel) deep color.Support compressed audio such as DTS Digital, Dolby Digital
Powered from Mini DisplayPort source.Connectors: Mini DisplayPort Male to HDMI Female.
This adapter will support audio only if your source device allows audio output through the Mini DisplayPorts interface

I also have a docking station that is compatible with both the X230 and T520, so my next step will be to try to connect the X230 using the docking station's DP output.

Can anyone suggest other things I should try?
Cheers!
Ian

Update: I literally thought of the docking station idea, as I was typing the first post. So, I got the docking station, the same HDMI cable, and the larger Displayport adapter that I use with my T520. Put the X230 on the dock, connected it up to the old Samsung TV and hey it works. So the problem must be either with the miniport adapter or the miniport itself. Hopefully I can find an adapter that works; the whole idea behind having the X230 is to have an extremely portable (but powerful) computer that I can connect up with a screen on the go, without having to pack around an ultradock. Fortunately the miniport adapters are cheap, just a matter of finding the right one.
Cheers!

There's also the legacy VGA port on your X230, but unfortunately nowadays not all video devices have a VGA port connection anymore :(
(A few years ago, VGA was still the "default" connection if you must bring only 1 video cable with you).

Don't laugh; we had a case in Africa a few years back where we could not connect via HDMI to a video projector, and we went for the default VGA option and it worked!

Anyways, agree with you and it sounds like your X230 mini displayport is a physical hardware defect.

Update: I got a friend to bring over his MacBook Pro that has a mini-displayport output, so I could test the adapter. It worked, with his machine. So, I've got an adapter that physically fits, but doesn't work, so I either need a different type, or there's some sort of display driver issue. I could, of course, use the old VGA output - both of my televisions are old enough that they have a VGA input - but I was hoping for the higher-quality video I can obtain with DisplayPort/HDMI, and compatibility with equipment available at whatever destination I'm headed to.
Cheers!
