X230 mini display port & audio

#1 Post by Natakranta » Wed Jan 20, 2021 9:02 pm

Is x230 mini display port capable of sending audio to TV?
Asking because I recently bought a mini display port to HDMI cable for my father to use with his x230 to plug it to his TV to watch Netflix on big screen and there is no audio on the TV. Laptop does not see HDMI audio device in Windows 10 sound settings. Windows and drivers seem to be up to date. Testing is limited to TeamViewer as we are over 2K km apart.
Is the cable bad? Like missing audio wire or something?
Or is the mini display port in x230 simply not able to send audio together with video signal?

Yes, it's definitely capable. I don't have a X230, but I have an Intel GPU T430s and have used it to output HDMI audio. Although I haven't used the miniDP port, but the docking station, the capabilities are in the chip itself.

Is there an "Intel Display Audio" device under the "Sound, video and game controllers" in Device Manager?

If not, try to reinstall the driver:

If you do see the device, but the laptop does not detect a TV connection when it is plugged, then it may be that the cable is bad / incompatible.

There is no audio wire "per se" in these cables, as both DP and HDMI send audio together with video as part of the data stream; however, it is encoded differently and requires proper handshake between the host and the display to work properly. DisplayPort++ technology (which X230 has) should detect that the device on the other end is HDMI, and output an HDMI signal instead of the DP signal. That is how passive cables / adapters work. However, if yours is an active one, it may cause the computer to output a DP signal, and then may the adapter is not properly converting the audio portion into HDMI? I have no way to know for sure, so these are just guesses.

Yes, the X230 sends audio through the mini display port.

I currently have two X230's set up with Win 7 running an Android Virtual Box (Nox....https://www.bignox.com/).

My local ISP provides Internet TV service through their own Android box, but also allows up to four other concurrent Android devices on the same subscription and playing at the same time.

X230 Mini display port-to-HDMI adapter>HDMI cable>TV.

Using different HDMI adapters on both X230 units, but both work to send audio with the video. If I remember correctly, I had to switch out one of the HDMI cables with a newer better one in order to get the audio stream working, but I accredited that to an old cheap HDMI cable.

Regards.
