x230 ivy bridge still works great in 2021

#1 Post by Yao2000 » Sat Feb 13, 2021 9:04 am

Its incredible that In year 2021 I use my X230 i7 3520m as my daily driver laptop and it runs flawlessly.

Anyone who wants to buy a X230 in year 2021, I still highly recommend it.

Install !vyrain bios patch, put in 16gb ram, do the 12.5 inch1080p or 13.3 inch 1080 or 16:10 full panel assembly upgrade and enjoy this laptop.

Got one today!
4GB RAM and 320GB HDD, but with the "premium" panel (looks great).
Upgraded with Samsung 860 Evo SSD and 16GB of RAM on the way. I think I'll keep it this way, with just these upgrades.

I have the crappy 720p panel on my x230i and yet I've gotten used to it enough to not let it be an annoyance. The *30 series has been a great survivor into the 'modern' world and I doubt that they'll become a drag in the next few years.

The 13.3 and 16:10 certainly don't look trivial.. that's rather brutal rework of the screen part right? Did anybody document them anywhere?

P.S. I wish my T520 was workstation-grade: building LLVM from source is taking hours. I suspect it would have taken a very considerable amount of time even on the latest and greatest hardware.. But a couple more cores certainly wouldn't hurt me. Another nice thing latest machines have are the NVMe SSD-s. Heck, I also wish that six-core X2100 would show up after all. That was planned to be my workstation-grade iron/ultraportable all in one..

Am I not mistaken here? There's no way to obtain NVMe speeds on Ivy Bridge Thinkpads?.. All these expresscards and internal slots still don't give us true NVM.e bliss do they?

Basically lid has to be cut to fit 13.3 screen (bezel too, but you can order it pre-cut), and screen is glued with double sided tape. Also taobao or nitrocaster board is needed that is soldered into the motherboard and acts as adapter for FHD compatibility. You can find more about the process of converting it to 13.3 here https://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comme ... e/e1dbzkn/, but I believe there should be a thread about it too and I hope I can post links here.

For lid cutting there is a link provided for pics what should be cut in that reddit post, this one: https://imgur.com/a/6CGlx
But I agree that one tutorial that explains every step would make it a lot easier. Maybe when I will have all needed parts I will try to make one
