x240 1080p TOUCH screen upgrade. Worth?

#1 Post by giammi56 » Tue Mar 23, 2021 5:02 pm

I bought a beautiful and quite cheap x240 i5 to be upgraded. My bad, I overlooked some specs and I thought I could easily upgrade the screen to 1080p, BUT I have just realized that it is the infamous 720p touch version..

I have read quite some post on the forum: the switch touch -> NON-touch involves replacing the whole screen (panel + cables + frame + hinges) and sounds pretty time-consuming.

On the other hand, I couldn´t find much about the upgrade 720p TOUCH -> 1080p TOUCH. What I could deduce from

You cannot remove the touch-screen from the LCD itself.
AFAIK there is also no HD Touchscreen.
is that IF the 1080p exists, should come with the touchpad glass already mounted, therefore it is not possible to change just the LCD panel. What would be the procedure then? To change the whole display?

What is your experience with the two types of upgrade?
Where can I find a 1080p IPS touch? Are the x250 parts compatible?
Would be perhaps better to resell the X240 as it is to save the touchscreen screen (would be a huge waste) and find another one already non-touch?

I don't know if it's available but I think there is a 1366x768 ips panel for x240. Isn't the LP125WH2 SPT1, AH-IPS 12.5" compatible? There aren't any 14" or 15.6" IPS HD panels for the T440 or T540.

Thank you for your reply! I have checked and the LP125WH2 SPT1, AH-IPS seems to be without touchscreen.
How would be the procedure to keep the touchscreen? Is the LCD glued to the touchscreen glass? I don´t know how it is working.

There are options to get the display with touchscreen.

In terms of how the digitizer is attached, I wish I knew. I've got a T440s touch with cracked glass. I suspect it's not fused but glued on and think careful use of a heat gun will allow separation but I'm not sure how the display is held in place. The non-touch versions use 4 screws while the touch versions have 2 screws at the bottom. I do like the IPS display much more than the TN HD+ panel, despite all the cracks in the glass. The HMM is not completely clear to me on how to remove the display for touch.

X240 and X250 use many the same parts, incl. LCDs.
I have an X250 with IPS FHD-touch with FRU 00HN747 which is LG LP125WF2-SPB2.
That one would fit your X240 perfectly.

Go to https://support.lenovo.com/ie/en/partslookup and enter your S/N (without -) to check what screen it came with ex factory.
Are you sure yours is a HD-touch and not FHD-touch?

Thank you for your precious inputs. I am excited to know that it is possible to have a 1080p touch.
I have a FRU 00HN840 ( ST50F78545 ), definitely a HD resolution.
Could you please suggest me a resource for the LCD switching? Is the procedure involving a heat gun to detach the digitalizer?

The digitizer is part of the 00HN747.
Get the X240 manual from the HMM link at the top of this page.
It's all described in there.
No idea where to get the screen, just make sure to get a genuine screen and not some "compatible" crap.
Have a look at the advertisers Thinkspot, Lapstore, etc. on the German https://thinkpad-forum.de/content/
