What are the perils of getting a compatible IPS LCD?

#1 Post by randomshinichi » Sat Oct 30, 2021 9:32 am

I'm looking for a 1336x768 IPS for my X230, and it's hard to find a seller that doesn't send a 'compatible' panel.
In addition, this makes a lot of sense:

So why again does everyone recommend that they get the exact same model when upgrading the screen?

One question: did you see the word "IPS" appear in that article even once? You didn't, did you.

Because it's not there.

When you have a laptop such as X230, which has several screens compatible with it, some of which are IPS, and some are not, then the risk of buying a screen that is merely "compatible" is that you may not get an IPS screen at all.

I hope this answers your question. :)

So you're saying, if I buy a LCD part which is an IPS one, they may actually ship me a TN LCD while saying it's "compatible"?

What does compatibility actually mean? I mean, if I buy a listing for a IPS panel, surely they should send me a panel that is IPS as well - and if it isn't the exact same model number, maybe it's not so bad if it physically fits and the connector is there and it's IPS too, right?

It means the screen will physically fit and can be attached using the same mounting points, and the cable/connector will fit and will display an image and not damage anything.

If you buy from a listing that specifically mentions IPS, then yes, you should expect IPS. But if it only mentions "compatible with FRU xxx", and doesn't mention panel technology, don't just assume you will get an IPS screen because the FRU mentioned is an IPS FRU.
