X230 keyboard swap - autodetecting classic keyboard in new BIOS?

#1 Post by peddy22 » Sat Nov 06, 2021 6:07 pm

I noticed that I didn't need to insulate the backlight pins on my keyboard, and the "keyboard illumination" control vanishes from BIOS when the classic keyboard is plugged in (on my X230). Is this a new BIOS feature? Is isolating pins still required?

Keyboard works fine btw

I didn't insulate the pins on mine (W530) and upon connection, the ribbon cable got fried and took the Trackpoint buttons with it. I have installed 1vyrain and EC controller patch, for using older batteries, keyboards and having the advanced BIOS menu / white-list removal.

What BIOS version are you talking about? Is it stock / unmodified from Lenovo?

1vyrain as well. I've also fried keyboards in the past on X230 (near the ribbon cable) and some keys wouldn't work. but this is a new motherboard. perhaps it's a motherboard dependent feature.

it also cycles thinklight-off instead of thinklight-backlight-off with the classic keyboard plugged in.

I understood that there are different possible outcomes when not insulating pins. Either the traces on the keyboard will "self-fuse" and everything will be fine, or something will burn and the keyboard will stop working (fully or partially).

What I don't understand, though, is whether the outcome depends on the laptop, keyboard or just some random luck when plugging in the first time.
