New X230T Owner. Any suggestions? Ultrabase, etc.?

#1 Post by E350 » Sat Jun 25, 2022 11:51 am

I have an i9 7-core P53. It uses a huge and expensive 230 Watt AC adapter. There is no car adapter for it. It is a great desk top replacement.

I come from years of using X61 12 inch as my daily driver. The 15 inch huge footprint of the P53 is just too big for me to make it great daily driver laptop.

My X61 laptops have one by one died due to fan errors.

So, I recently bought a pristine X201T which is fantastic, but it doesn't have a Thinklight or a backlit keyboard which is a deal breaker for my use.
So I bought a X230T which does have the backlit keyboard. Waiting for its arrival.

There is nothing better for me than a 12.5" screen as a daily driver. I don't use the touch screen on the X201 much except for viewing photos for which it is stellar because you can thumb/forefinger expand and move about the photo using your finger.

Coming from the X61, I miss the 4:3 aspect ratio which the X201 does not have. And the keyboard is sloppy on the X201 compared to the fantastic keyboard of the X61. But the keyboard layout on the X201 is the same as the X61, so the X201 is touch typing intuitive for me.

And the X201T uses all my X61 existing AC adapters and car adapters, which I assume the X203T will as well.

Any suggestions for the X230T?

I will buy the Ultrabase for it. Any suggestions for which Ultrabase and DVD to buy?

SSD for storage, max out to 16GB of RAM. This Ultrabase: https://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/ThinkPad ... e_Series_3
If you have the money: FHD screen upgrade, Motherboard with Quad Core CPU, classic keyboard.

The X230T keyboard is certainly OK but it's not comparable to a X61, so look at the classic conversion.

Ultrabase is OK if a bit heavy to carry around, Try getting a rare NOS battery slice instead unless you want the DVD player.

Wouldn't bother with motherboard mod as the 230 gen intel CPU are the last that wont throttle at the hint of any serious work, only in last 2 or 3 years have intel CPUs surpassed the 230 in stock config. If running windows watch out for BIOS updates that kneecap performance in the name of spectre. This family of bugs only matter for servers that share different user processes at same time - ie cloud applications, so if running single user linux just append "mitigations=off" as a kernel parameter.

What are your experiences with flashing your BIOS with Ivyprep and 1vyrain from the T430 forum?

Well I stumbled my way through the process of Ivyprep and 1vyrain and everything seems to be working great. I installed the Intel AC 7260 wifi card and the newest Bluetooth Daughter card. And Bluetooth is definitely better!

Update: This morning I used Lenovo Vantage to update the drivers. And now the Bluetooth is acting choppy again.

Any suggestions how I can get last night's Bluetooth drivers back?

Update: Went into Device Manager and deleted Bluetooth then restarted and scanned for hardware changes and Bluetooth is working perfectly again.
