functional differences between x230 and x230t

#1 Post by astral » Sat Sep 30, 2023 7:32 pm

At some point I would like to purchase myself an x230 to use as an ultraportable win7 system. when i look on ebay, the tablet versions seem to be a lot more common and less expensive than the non-t version. yet the most popular ones among collectors seem not to be the tablet version.

the tablet functionality seems useful to me. what's the catch here, if there is one?

if I get one I'd like to mainly:

- x220 keyboard swap it
- throw in large ssd (do these have an msata supporting slot in addition to 2.5 sata?)
-ips display swap if it doesn't come with one. ideally try to find a 1080p kit for it if they're even being made anymore.

the main one where i see a barrier potential is the lcd. if the x230t came with an IPS 1366 option that's fine in a 12 inch lcd... i guess... but if the digitizer is separate from the panel a 1080p upgrade would be nice.

anything else I should know that's different between the two?

The X230 Tablet already comes with an IPS display, albeit 1366x768.

AFAIK none of the 1080p kits fit on the Tablet variants--there are components on the Tablet's system board and/or chassis that prevent the adapter from lining up with the docking connector.

Yes it has mSATA slot like the regular X230.

Someone has modded an X230T with a 7-row keyboard: https://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comme ... board_mod/
Planned Purchase: T480s i5-8350 FHD Touch
Impulse Buy: Thinkpad not named for safety reasons

Compared to a non-tablet, it's slightly heavier and bulkier. The screen hinge may be a weak point (or at least feels like it).

So all x230t models had ips? that would be nice.

does anyone know if the 1080p kits for the regular version are even still being made? the guy selling them says “more stock in September” with no year mentioned, and September is over now anyway…

7 row being possible is good - I assume the proper EC flash is available for it?

do both models use the same battery?

The Tablet and the non-Tablet use different batteries.
