Re: W540 Will Be A Monster!!
The only part I am waiting for more details on is the GPU. Will it be the K2100? or are they going to be awesome and break Nvidia's rules and stuff a K3100 or greater in?
Regardless I am in serious need of a new laptop, and this may just do the trick...

Weak!!!
Still the darthboard under and above the screen.
I wonder what excuse they will come up with this time on why they didn't pick 16:10
The higher resolution is nice... but not as nice as a more useable aspect ratio.
Well, finally a numpad.... now they just need to put that 7th row back where it belongs and get that retarded key hassling undone.
Where did the trackpoint buttons go...?

If I were in the market for a new 15" workstation-class laptop this year I'd probably get the Precision M4800 (3200x1800) even if it's not IPS (while cursing the lack of high-res 17" models).rambo47 wrote: 15.5-inch 3K IPS display, delivering a 2,880 x 1,620 resolution.

Re: W540 Will Be A Monster!!
M4800 (compared to W540):
*It got mSata (or M.2) too
*It got a numpad too
*It got something that resembles a trackpoint too
*It got a multi-use bay too
*It got 9-cell and Slice batteries too
*It got a docking connector too, with a dock that doesn't block left-side vents...
*It got three internal slots for cards too
*It got 4 DIMM slots too
But on top of the W540:
+It has eSataP (Yeah!!!!)
+It has fullsize Displayport
+It even has HDMI
+It has a proper 54mm ExpressCard slot
+It has a two sets of three physical mouse buttons.
+For those into super high resolutions: 3200*1800 is more than 2880*1620
And you get all that for the price of:
-No Thunderbolt
-0.78 lbs
So... if one has to get used to the crappy 6-row layout... you might just as well switch brands and keep the eSata and physical mouse buttons.

One downside of Dell is that they seem to have given up on configure-to-order for core components (at least through the website). If you like their combinations of CPU/GPU/display then that isn't a problem though.

Re: W540 Will Be A Monster!!
Well, Lenovo doesn't offer any CTO's here either.
Both my T61 and W520 are imported from the US. Not so much to get a CTO, which I didn't. But to pay 500 euro less.

Yes, the guys in the US live a cheap life In europe we pay so much more for everything.
For the M4800: I would check it out in person, Lenovos never failed to surprise me on their build quality. When working on other notebooks - and that includes also the most expensive model lines - I noticed huge differences.

SO when will the W540 be ready to go out Lenovo's door?
I thought Novermber was the date.

Re: W540 Will Be A Monster!!
I am ready to give up on my Thinkpad ownership. The M4800 is looking very tempting, if for no other reason than it has a more traditional keyboard and proper dedicated buttons for its track-point mouse. The W540 has about the same "maxed-out" configuration as the top-end M4800, but the M4800 looks more like a Thinkpad than the W540 to me!
Actually, I am going to wait for Broadwell-based devices since it looks like they will offer a considerable improvement over Haswell in terms of performance & power use...I generally find that it is better to upgrade on Intel's "tick" cycle rather than its "tock" cycle since you seem to get more bang for the buck, so to speak. I HOPE that Lenovo takes a step or two back with some of their design directions, because I am just not digging their newer stuff. Mainly the neutering of the Trackpoint.
