ThinkPad P50 has the option to install two 2.5" HDD. However, "Hard disk drive cable" is needed.

Per Lenovo, there are two different part numbers:

00UR835 Cable,HDD,slot3
00UR836 Cable,HDD,slot4

Obiously, one is the the bay on the left and the other one if for the right.

I just ordered a 20EN0013US. It comes with a 500GB HDD, which is on the right bay.

If I shall add a 2nd HDD, I'm going to use the bay on the left. Now, my question is - is the bay on the left slot 3 or slot 4? Which cable I'll need?

Guess you'll have to order such HD cables from Lenovo, so why not order both?
Or wait till you have the machine, then check the P/N on whatever HD-cable you have...

That link you posted for the P50, is actually showing that of the P70. Just to clarify.

i have also been looking for the harddrive cable for an extra ssd drive in my lenovo P50.
and now a finally found a site in Germany that has these cables.

i have just ordered one, so i have no experience with it yet, but they have for both hdd slots.

there are also image showing which way the cable goes and from that i can see that

2.5" SATA wire for ThinkPad P50 00UR835 is for the right side
2.5" SATA wire for ThinkPad P50 00UR836 is for the left side (where m2 ssd also can by added)
when you look from the bottom of the laptop

They can be ordered under those numbers from my Lenovo service parts store as well, so I assume it's the same for Europe or worldwide. Huge price difference between the two (factor 20), so make sure you get the correct one.

Is there any difference performance-wise? Are they connected in the same way to the mainboard?

I think the price difference comes from how many they sell -- the more the cheaper due to manufacture factor--not the performance. Can you give us the real price when you ordered? I may need the left slot one later. Thanks!

Well, now Lenovo has released a kit containing all of the necessary components to upgrade the system with a 2.5" drive. Components in the kit:
