[W530] Blank screen & four beeps

#1 Post by Dancorp » Mon Jul 24, 2017 9:08 am

Hi everyone, i'm Daniel, 35yo from Marseille (France)
In advance, sorry for my english !

I love thinkpad laptop, i have already a T61 and a T400.
i just got a W530 for free from a friend... for parts (fallen)

As mentionned in the title, it won't boot, and i got 1 sequence of 4 short beep.
That's very difficult to have informations on this bios code.
I have already try to change RAM, remove CMOS battery, remove battery... without success... i still got a blanck screen (on int. screen and vga) with 4 beeps.

Is the motherboard in fault ? If yes, which one must be ordered (looks to have diff FRU/Versions)
The laptop is a W530 Model 2441.

Thanks in advance for your help.

BR.

Daniel

Yeah, system board is probably dead. Doubt its worth it with all the damage. Buy one off eBay if you really want one.

The efficiency of two screens equally sized with equal numbers if pixels are equal. The time spent by a 4:3 user complaining about 16:9 is proportional to the inefficiency working with a 16:9 display, therefore the amount of useful work extracted is equal.

Thanks for you response. In appearance, the laptop is in good condition.
Which is the FRU for my model ? Can i find it on the system board itself?

Different FRUs for different system configs. Check under the RAM for a sticker. Dont make my mistake and by the WRONG FRU. It just plain wont boot.

Nope, wrong sticker.

The FRU is a number that looks like this

##*####

# = number
* = letter

My W700 motherboard has a FRU of 42W8901.

The sticker should be located here:

Also, yes there are some others on eBay. Make sure the FRU matches up before you buy!

This one doesn't have the FRU tag so I wouldn't trust if I were you but that's your decisions to buy or not.

Got it ! Thanks again !
FRU: 04W6827

This offer looks to be a good deal, but i have to be sure to receive my FRU or check if other FRU in titles are compatibles.

Enter the serial no (without the -) here: http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/partslookup
It should give you the parts as used in that machine.
A motherboard there is also known as PLANAR or BDPLANAR.

Get the complete partslist here: https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/pd024401
and the T530/W530 manual from the HMM link above.

If it mentions more than 1 FRU in the title, avoid it. It means they have no clue what the product actually is.

Thanks :)

For my S/N, the BDPLANAR FRU should be 04X1503

Look at the pictures of offered mobos before you decide.
Check also if they are real pictures, not generic ones. Ask if need be.
Just in case: you'll want one with 4 RAM slots, 2 on top and 2 on bottom and without W8pro in the parts/frubom list.

Thanks my friend.
Before ordering a "new" system board, i'll try to check for a broken soldered pad with a hot air gun (fallen laptop)
(sorry for my english)

@Dancorp: I had a similar boot error code awhile back but on an X60. See here: /viewtopic.php?t=90116

TL;DR: Try removing all memory modules and put a different sized one in a single slot and see what happens. For your system, I believe you'll have to use Slot 0.

THanks for the tip :
I have tried to put a PC3 8500 (1066) 2GB card > No Post, no beep, nothing (underclocked ram ?)
But now, the laptop is not beeping anymore with the legacy ram (PC3 10600)
I have try to disconnect power supply / CMOS / Battery, still nothing.
The only way to have some beep is by removing ram. As expected, i got the 1-3-3-1 sequence.

Doesn't W530 require low voltage modules (DDR3L)? If it does and you put in standard voltage module it should not work I guess.

Was the problem identified as faulty/incorrect memory?

I have a W530 that exhibits these symptoms, but only once in a blue moon. After a few attempts it will boot properly and without issue. This machine was an eBay purchase and already maxed out at 32GB, which leads me to believe that the reseller may have mixed and matched RAM.
