Replace W541 Screen and Install LinuxMint Cinnamon

#1 Post by Axfinger » Tue Jan 29, 2019 8:36 pm

Hey all,

My girlfriend's sister has given me her old laptop to fix up. It is a Thinkpad W541 with a very corrupted version of WIndows 10 on it and a broken screen. With much effort I managed to get DBAN going on it to wipe out all the bad crap and start a new. Now what's left is to repair the screen and put a new OS on it. I am a LinuxMint fan so I figured I would try out Cinnamon 19.1. I have a couple of questions.

I have heard the W540 model can have some issues with older BIOS via this: https://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:W540

Is this a problem for the W541? I am a bit concerned and don't want to brick this if it can be avoided.

I plan to use this screen as replacement: https://www.amazon.com/Panel-IBM-Lenovo ... nkpad+w541

and follow these instructions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wFkq7TggB3g&t=45s

If any of this is wrong/suspect, I would love any info anyone has.

Why go 1080p? It's a TN panel. Go for the 3K IPS one! Get the VVX16T028J00 panel. You may also need a new cable.
