Is anything gained by swapping a 2.5" SSD for an M.2 NVME drive?

Just curious since I see the W540 has an opening for an M.2 42mm NVME drive. I'm not sure if that is a PCIe 4x or SATA connection. If that is also SATA III speed as the 2.5" SSD is, would there be any difference in start up or overall operation-this would be in email, surfing, light photo editing, no gaming or spread sheets.

That 'slot' runs at SATA-III speed and is for an M.2 NGFF 2242 SSD.
NVME does NOT work in there.

It will run at the same speed as the main SSD.

Thanks for the prompt reply. I think I'll use the slot for additional internal storage-I do not want to give up my DVD drive.
