W530/K1000M - Screen upgrade to FHD? Problem with "Built in" EDID?

#1 Post by DiagonalArg » Tue Apr 13, 2021 5:51 am

My W530 has an AUO B156RW01 v.1 LCD. That's WXGA++ (1600x900) and I'd like to upgrade to FHD. I have done a similar upgrade with my T530 and T520, using AUO B156HW01 v.4, which I obtained from @Brad on this board. The results were excellent. (Unfortunately, he doesn't have any more.)

Checking with laptopscreen.com, I am told that I could use the following panels:

LG-Philips LP156WF1(TL)(B1) <== Edit: So far no information about this one.
CHIMEI INNOLUX N156HGE-L11 15.6 MATT LAPTOP SCREEN <== Edit: Apparently works but is slightly thinner than original panel and gamut is poor, 60%. Otherwise, it's ok.
AU Optronics 15.6" Matte LCD Screen B156HTN01.1 <== Edit: Apparently produces faint vertical lines on the screen. Unpleasant.

Since I had good luck with AUO, I looked further at that last panel, and found this admonishment at Bliss Computers:
Will only replace Original Full HD 15.6 1920x1080 resolution ... Any up-gradation attempt from WXGA HD to Full HD or WXGA++ to Full HD will surely fail.
[See the 3rd picture]

If your existing screen is WXGA HD 1366 x 768, please be advised that your effort to upgrade resolution will definitely fail. When installing our Full HD screen over your WXGA HD one, you will incur various issues like ghostly image or lines or white LCD. Although you may have read posts online that people were successfully replaing WXGA HD with Full HD, our product is an exception. The product is newer lot of Full HD, which comes with EDID built in. The difference here prevents an upgrade in resolution.

Please review picture on the right, provided by a recent failed customer.

And in fact, I found similar complains on this board. So it seems that laptopscreen.com's advice can't be depended on. Can someone clue me in to what path I might have to accomplish this upgrade? Might that AUO B156HW01 v.4 that worked in my T520/530's be an option? Unfortunately, that's priced at $150. How about the v.7, which can be had for a reasonable price ($80) and seems to work? How about that N156HGE-L11? Might that be a good choice?

I appreciate any input!

Hi, no proficiency here, but I expected W530 to be almost a carbon copy of T530, just with extra RAM slots. IMHO whichever panel worked on one should work on the other and vice versa. AFAIK AUO B156HW01 v.4 is a highly regarded panel and the only one Lenovo itself was fitting to W530.

As for the possibility of fitting other panels I will allow people who really know something to speak. I think I did across a statement that none of AUO B156HW01 variations other than v.4 are suitable, but what do I know?

BTW I did think AUO B156HW01 v.4 indeed has EDID built-in. I think I heard on this forum about Thinkpads prior to T60 like T42 using panels that didn't have EDID, but - my understanding is - starting roughly with T60 we now have EDID in all panels.

I had V.4 (matte, default) panel in W530, and I also tried V.7 (glossy variant of V.4 with same properties (95% gamut, 270 nit, etc.)) variant in W530, which I have ordered from a Chinese store and it worked like a charm (except being very dim - I bought most likely a very worn panel; however changing brightness setting was working without problem), but I've sold whole machine some time ago so I don't have it anymore. As for other panels, I never had that LG panel, which is supposed to be an IPS drop-in replacement - never bothered to get one - I've assumed that it would be nearly impossible to find it, and if possible, then that it would cost a "myland" and that it would be some worn out panel barely working. As for B156HTN01.1, I actually had that panel when I bought my W530, but I got rid of it because mine had barely visible vertical stripes across whole screen with like ~2px spacing between each other, and it was driving me crazy, but otherwise it was working fine and it had the same properties like V.4 (95% gamut, etc.).
X230, X1C7 and B156HW01 V.4 (from a W530 ThinkPad) used as an external monitor using LCD controller board.

LaptopScreen.com is claiming there is a matte version of the v.7?

I was assuming they actually have those in stock, but maybe not.

I haven't had much luck with LG, but that's IPS?? I could be tempted. Again, LaptopScreen is claiming to have it.

Ya, I don't think I could handle that.

Thanks for your input!

Edit: Ooph. All these places list all kinds of screens, but when you really push the issue, they are just talking about "compatible" models. So right now all LaptopScreen.com has are the "compatible" models listed in my OP. I chatted with "Bob" there and he claimed that LG panel is TFT, and that's one of the panels he actually has.

Hi All,

I am also looking for a replacement screen. It is for a T530 2394-5ZG (SN: R9-YMDYV). I found one place that sells them and they have listed 3 versions of the same V.4 model. Do you know what is the difference between them and what is the H/W:0A or 1A stands for?

Any feedback on the seller would be appreciated also.

I don't know the difference, but I very much doubt they have those screens. I'd call them and check that they are not just selling "compatible" models. The screen I ended up getting was:

LP156WF1(TL)(B1)
Part Type: LCD Screen info
Size: 15.6" WideScreen info
Resolution: FHD (1920x1080) info
Surface Type: Matte info
Video Connector: 40 pin video connector info
Condition: New Grade A+ info
Warranty: Lifetime info

I'm happy with it.

Thank you. Where are these available if you don't mind me asking?

From my notes:
I just had a chat with "Dave" who told me that you have this precise screen:
