W530 Fails to Boot when Docked

#1 Post by DiagonalArg » Sun Jun 27, 2021 10:28 pm

Is anyone having this problem? I get an error when I try to book with my W530 docked:

Code: Select all

Unexpected return from initial read: Volume Corrupt, buffersize 69000
Failed to load image \EFI\ubuntu\grub64.efi: Volume Corrupt
start_image () returned Volume Corrupt
That boot partition is on a USB connected directly to the laptop. I had no external displays connected to the dock. Only the dock itself and keyboard/mouse. The dock is a 4338, and I tried two of them (USB 3.0 and eSATA) with the same result.

Ok, so it turns out that if you mistakenly plug in the 90W power supply to the dock, the machine will post but then for reasons unknown, set the dirty bit on the FAT filesystem that holds the EFI files and from there fail to boot.
