2560x1440 for W530

#1 Post by my03 » Fri Sep 10, 2021 1:16 pm

First of all - apologies if this question has come up before.

Would it be possible to replace the 1080 display of an W530 with a higher resolution one? Even if it would involve some modding?

What's wrong with the FHD one? Many consider it the best panel of the time (I have a W530 myself). Lenovo didn't release an IPS one in that generation.

Though you might find much better panels now, machines like the W530 use LVDS for the connection while more modern ones are eDP. That is going to be a big limitation, unless you're willing to purchase one of those LVDS to eDP convertes of Aliexpress.

While it's likely to be possible to run a newer panel that way, I'd advise you against it. With any mod you're essentially giving yourself your own technical support, instead of relying on Lenovo. I mean, if you stick to stock parts, you can always find some replacement without much effort and little money. But if you put a converter in your laptop and the manufactures discontinues it, then you won't be able to buy another and your new panel will become useless.

The guys from China are simply great, but it's a wild world out there and thing is, you never know what you're getting into. An adapter like that might actually have decent quality to it and last as long as the rest of the laptop (or more); but may just as well be a shoddy device that fails within a couple of months. Are you into taking chances? How much do you value your own time?

Besides, 1080p in a 15.6 panel is already a quite high DPI. I might be getting older but I don't get the new trend of super high resolutions... and people scaling everything back down in software.
