W541 motherboard heatsink fan connector is wider than the heatsink connector I have

#1 Post by JuanOpinyon » Thu Mar 16, 2023 4:45 pm

So I just bought this T540p laptop and decided to upgrade the board to a W541. I bought the new board and a heatsink to go with it since it now has an Nvidia Quadro built in.

So the W541 motherboard has an 8pin black male connector for the heatsink fan, but my heat-sink's connector is a smaller 6pin white female connector.

Is there a way to swap out the connectors?

Is there an adapter I can do maybe? Is there a schematic on the fan's pins I can look up?

Can't really afford to buy a whole new heatsink just because of the connector.

Any help would very much be appreciated, please advise.

The W540/W541 have 2 different fans because there are 2 different GPUs:
Q1 = NVIDIA Quadro K1100M (your motherboard) with 8-pin fan 04X1894
Q3 = NVIDIA Quadro K2100M with 6-pin fan 04X1895
The metal covering the GPU is different between them as well, so the fans are NOT interchangeable.

OMG, thank you!

That really helps me out.

UPDATE: Unfortunately I think your information is off, most likely in reverse I think.

The heatsink I have should be correct for the motherboard you stated, 04X1895, but actually it seems to be 6pin instead (see below):

Image

I also verified my motherboard's GPU and actually it's Nvidia Quadro K1100M 2GB (N15P-Q1-A2):

So then the info is the other way around, unless it's arbitrary depending on the Quarterly revisions made:

Q1 = NVIDIA Quadro K2100M with 6-pin fan 04X1895
Q3 = NVIDIA Quadro K1100M (my motherboard) with 8-pin fan 04X1894

RBS info above has been corrected.

Since my new T540p has a blown F11 fuse (at least, and possibly worse damage) it may be getting a motherboard replacement, W540 boards being an upgrade, so I'd also like to know how this works out. At least compared to T540p's GT 730M heatsink, the W540 heatsinks have additional copper bits and coverage.

These are all the heatsink FRUs for the three models:

T540p
04X1898 UMA 47W Toshiba - Primary
04X1899 FAN UMA 47W Delta - Secondary
04X1900 FAN SWG Toshiba - Primary (Nvidia)
04X3801 FAN SWG Delta - Secondary (Nvidia)

According to the T540p PSREF there is only one model the 20BE00BSUS that was configured with both a QM (i7-4710MQ) and the GT 730m but it still got the regular T540p heatsink.

W540
04X1894 FAN Workstation Q1 Toshiba
04X1895 FAN Workstation Q3 Toshiba

W541
04X1894 WS,Q1,Toshiba
04X1895 WS,Q3,Toshiba

Ergo W540 and W541 used the same heatsinks.

From pictures on Lenovo the only substantial difference I see between the Q1 and Q3 heatsinks is the Q1s have additional thermal pads around both CPU and GPU while Q3s limit the pads to only around the CPU. The heatsinks otherwise look the same to me. And for the fans, Q1 has the 8 pin fan, and Q3 the 6 pin fan.

To further sleuth this out I put the model numbers of some W540 and W541 into the parts lookup to see what heatsinks they return:

W540 K1100M 20BG004HUS: Q1
W540 K1100M 20BH002UUS: Q1
W541 K1100M 20EF0014US: Q3
W541 K1100M 20EF000YUS: Q3
W541 K1100M 20EG0040US: Q3

W540 K2100M 20BG0015US: Q3
W540 K2100M 20BG0016US: Q3
W540 K2100M 20BH001PUS: Q3
W541 K2100m 20EF000QUS: Q3

It looks to me that W540 with the K1100M got the Q1 Heatsink, W540 with K2100M got the Q3 Heatsink, and W541 with either GPU all get the Q3 Heatsink.

I wonder if you got sent a W540 board instead of a W541 since it seems to me most W541 used the 6 pin fan.

Sideways topic, I'm really curious what sorts of LCD options these machines have since they support 40 pin eDP for the official old Panasonic 3K, but 40 pin eDP is also used for QHD, 4K, and the 16:10 16" WQXGA and ridiculously named WQUXGA. Only 2cm taller than the 15.6" panels, I kind of want to hack one in, assuming there's no whitelist. These machines seem overly prone to blowing their backlight fuses though. Even with pumping the power button to drain the caps, I still got an arc on mine.

edit: Just going to put here my finding that the 40 pin cable is specific to the 3K panel and using it with any other 40 pin panel will explode the LCD circuit on the motherboard.
