UEFI BIOS update 1.33 > 1.35 bricked my L460

#1 Post by Mueller1337 » Fri Jan 18, 2019 5:04 am

Hello,
I conducted a bios update prompted by Lenovo vantage. Everything went normal. At the end of the flashing process the laptop should restart but It did not. It won’t boot and post ist’s just a Black screens without anything. As I know of the Lenovo forums my laptop is bricked now. Is there Any way to recover my bios or reflash it via usb?

The mentioned forum thread is:

Kind regards

Apparently you joined a constantly growing club!
Never EVER do a BIOS update from within Windows!
Download the .ISO and make a bootable CD, then update BIOS from there!

It's too late now, the damage is done.
Seems that in the meantime Lenovo have pulled the 1.35 update...

You'd need a backup of your previous (1.33) version, which you could then "restore" using an SPI-programmer.
It being an UEFI BIOS, you need a unique file for each laptop, you cannot just copy it from another machine.
In other words, you're up the sh!tcreek without a paddle.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

Wow thats really bad to hear! Thanks for the fast reply! So the option to solder on a new bios chip is not working either? I have to replace the Mobo or buy a new laptop?
I did like 10 bios updates on that Maschine and the 11th failed.
Dark day for me :(

Best regards

This eBayer sells L460 BIOS chips.
For that price it's worth trying.
But AFAIK a new BIOS also needs a matching TPM/security chip.
I have not (yet) messed with UEFI BIOS chips, so maybe I'm wrong. Let's hope so!
