serious ghosting problem TP Yoga

#1 Post by syrahnose » Sat Mar 22, 2014 3:06 pm

I was toying with idea of getting one of these and found this thread which makes it clear there are serious, possibly unsolvable, hardware problems. Lenovo must have known about these but ignored without recognition until now.

One wonders if the returns on this may have broken new records?

I think as a general rule, these things tend to get blown out of proportion. That's not to say everything is hunky dory, but if you're that concerned about it, then don't buy one.

My thoughts mirror ZaZ as this is true with this issue on the forum mentioned. I reviewed all 29 pages (as of today) of the forum topic - it appears about 9-12 'posters' were contributing to about 85% of the dialogue. On the last page (#29), one user detailed a solution on how he adjusted the settings to neutralize the ghosting issue on his machine. I don't know, of course, it this solution will work for everyone - we should know on page 30 or later.

Lenovo is interacting with users, via their numerous posts, with assurances this issue was being researched so it could be resolved. They may have a different solution.

The Thinkpad Yoga is a laptop utilizing a new concept. To buy one now requires, in my view, an 'early adopter' approach. You should expect some issues that will only be resolved after they become known via user feedback. Not all potential issues can be foreseen prior to the first release by the manufacturer. This holds true for computers, automobiles and most products. The true mark of what constitutes a "good manufacturer" is how well they work with customers to protect their brand image. I have confidence Lenovo will protect theirs.

As a recent owner of the TP Yoga (delivered in third week of December), I am having my fair share of frustration with this Laptop. My TP Yoga, after four months, does not have this "Ghosting" issue. My issues, though, are centered around the W8 OS, the new style Touchpad and the new style Keyboard. I am constantly 'tweeking" the settings so that I can be the most productive on this new device. It is quite different from ALL of my previous Thinkpads. But no regrets, so far.

Please advise if you have any questions.

"On the last page (#29), one user detailed a solution on how he adjusted the settings to neutralize the ghosting issue on his machine. I don't know, of course, it this solution will work for everyone - we should know on page 30 or later."

My impression was this posters issues were very different. He didn't have a problem previously with ghosting, but changed some settings later which caused a longer burned in ghost. His solution was a software fix.

The other posters complained about ghosting that took 5-10 seconds to recover which seemed to be inherent in the LG screen shared with this and Dell's XPS 11. That won't be fixed with new driver/software. Dell have now come out and formally admitted there is a major manufacturing problem with the screen which LG has to fix somehow. And Dell seem to be guaranteeing the will replace the screens.

Lenovo have not formally admitted the problem exists yet. I see too that there seem to be similar complaints on some Yoga 2 Pro and newest Idea pad Yogas.

Your advice on 'early adopter beware' is well taken and I will hold off until Lenovo fix the issues or buy from Dell.

I was quite keen to pull the trigger on TPY, but their seem to be other issues surfacing too. Yours as well. Or just go for temporary simplier fix of low end yoga 13 and see how form works.

My old x61t and x200 are still ticking over, so was looking for light, transportable notebook/tablet solution with handwriting rec.

You have to remember the smaller number of users who post with a problem is a very small percentage of the buyers as a whole and almost no one posts everything is going well. That's not to say to say everything this is perfect, but it does make these issues seem much larger than they are in reality.

If that is the case, couldn't that be said about any post on this site then?

Syrahnose,

Please review the two posts on page 35 from a Lenovo rep on the Lenovo forum you referenced.
It appears a solution is forthcoming for those impacted by the "ghosting" issue. Let's hope it's a long-term solution.

It's encouraging that Lenovo have admitted there is a significant issue and are in process of offering a fix to all concerned. Thanks for pointing that out.

following the ghosting issues on the above forum, solutions seem to remain unresolved so far. No one has detailed a new panel replacement part for the faulty LP panels. It also seems that where one moderator on the Lenovo forum has intervened repeatedly and tried his best to help out, lenovo have not acknowledged the ghosting issue officially and haven't done the best job of clearing the problem up. Repair facilities appear unaware of the problem and implications are that faulty panels are being replaced with panels that may (often do) end up having the same problem. Reading how angry and frustrated many customers have been, it isn't a good look for Lenovo.

I experienced the gosting problem.

On the official Lenovo forum, a Lenovo staff member communicated ~~Sept 15 2014 that a new ghosting-free IPS pannel is in use in the Yogas and that the replacement displays used in repairs should now be of this newer model all over.

Lenovo replaced my screen because of my support complaint about ghosting, and now it works perfectly - and the color reproduction on the new display is much better.
