Stuck in Win10 ver. 1511

#1 Post by hellosailor » Mon Jul 31, 2017 5:44 pm

I upgraded from Win7/64 Pro, which shiped on my W530, to Win10 close to the free cut-off date. And manually updated every couple of weeks after that, or so I thought. Now a couple of weeks ago I try to download and install the Creators Update, and it refuses to run. Varying error messages and online suggestions about ACLS and maybe I'm not an admin account and other bogus snark hunts, so I finally got hold of MS Support via an online chat.

Spent over 8 hours with each of 3 support reps, who use logmein to poke around, always NG in the end. Always varying error messages that end in "Gee, this upgrade can't be installed, pick a random error code". (So to speak.) So finally rep#4 says oh, for sure, you can't get here from there, you need to install the v.1607 intermediate upgrade, really, if you download that and run it, that will work, and then you can install the creators upgrade.

OK, fine. And the 1607 upgrade gave the best error message yet: We don't think Win10 can be installed on this machine. Ergh, really? It already *IS* installed here, I'm just trying to upgrade it. Nope. Can't do. Can spend hours repeatedly as it goes online to look for still more updates, or it runs to 100% and then says it can't install...Old update databases have been flushed, you name it.

Anyone have any real good ideas about why the major updates (1607 is the Anniversary Update, I think they call it) would refuse to run?

AFAIK I'm not doing anything odd to the system, it runs solo so there are no other users, no network policies, that might have been snuck in. [censored] thing just refuses to update, and I REALLY don't want to reinstall everything in a new "from scratch" Win10 installation.

It was nice to find real MS support online...but they're trained monkees, hoping to type out Shakespeare if they keep banging enough keys long enough. No real clue as to what they're up to.

Hold on, wait for RBS to come along and bash W10 :D . Don't know what to tell you, all tech support us a bunch of scripted monkeys getting paid minimum wage in a 2-3rd world country, even Microsoft.

Are you sure that you don't have Malware on your Thinkpad?

What virus or malware software do you use?

Careful when connecting to so called Microsoft support. Trust only 1 person with your computer.

Hey, do I get any trustful credit???

Anyway, I totally forgot about malware. Download MalwareBytes. Its free and is the most accurate at catching EVERYTHING. When I mean everything, I MEAN EVERYTHING!!

If I have any malware resident here, it is the most sophisticated, stealthy, inactive and clandestine piece on the planet. I keep my security settings and procedures on "paranoid". I don't take candy from strangers, not even the ones that look like big bunnies or wear red suits and black boots accompanied by reindeer.

And to back me up, yes, I regularly run MalwareBytes and sweeps with Windows Defender (whatever they call it these days) manually as well as background resident.

That was one of the early bogus suggestions for the problem: To disable my A/V software. ROFLMAO, the Windows upgrades can run without MS's own Defender being uninstalled.

Not that I've never had nor caught nor had to clean out a boogie man, but there are none here now, haven't been for some time.

Getting the $64,000 Question right won't be THAT easy. Sorry guys.

Yes you would be ok because of MalwareBytes regular scans but I have seen Windows 10 Defender paralyzed by a Malware/Virus.

It wouldn't install updates and otherwise the system seemed normal. Get rid of Defender and install Avast if you want serious protection.

Malwarebytes will probably pick up Avast as malware and it might be right.

Just. My $.02

I think were handling with a whole another species of virus, if its even a virus.

And again...
If there's malware on this machine, it is So sophisticated that nothing on the market has picked it up. And it has gotten into a system where cross-linked sites, third-party links, ActiveX, Java, JavaScript, etc. are all disabled. Certificates are always checked. And nothing except plain text gets read without knowing the source. And scanning it anyway.
The odds of malware here are infinitesimal. The odds of malware that the Update process would stumble on, and nothing else would find? Even smaller.
The odds of Yet Another Fine Microsoft Programming Bug? Well, those are proven to be higher.

No doubts that is where your problem probably resides. This is why I won't entertain Windows 10 as a daily driver yet.

I hoping things get better in a couple of years.

FYI, I just successfully installed Windows 10 version 1703 (64bit) on the crappiest Core2Duo-era consumer craptop imaginable (an HP Pavilion dv6-1353cl made in 2009), with all drivers working and all updates installed, so I don't understand why you are struggling with Lenovo's flaship Thinkpad from 2012. I bet a clean install using the latest ISO image would work, but you already said that you would rather not go that route.

Create a bootable usb stick (need 4GB or larger) using https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/softwar ... /windows10 and run setup.exe while in windows (not from boot).

You might also want to "clean up" any windows updates and temporary installation files (Disk C > Properties > Disk Cleanup > Clean up system files )

San-
Want the t-shirt? BTDT, and it still fails. I think that was the creative error message that said Win10 couldn't be installed on my computer. Despite the fact that it was already here.
Run through four very long remote access sessions with MS techs, they all knew how to fix it. Yeah, that's why it still ain't fixed. Can't make a recovery stick, for unspecified reasons, either.
That's why I'm thinking I'll get a new system (probably Win10) for "the world" and just take this one back to Win7 and air gap it.

There are still two companies making write-protectable USB sticks, i.e. flip a switch and nothing can write to them or infect them, and a third company charging professional forensic equipment prices for a USB "isolation" stick that will do the same thing for all USB devices. So, there will be ways to maintain security without total isolation at all times.

i guess it's not the thread for simple guesses :(

if you ever suspect your system drive, try cloning it using clonezilla to another one (same or larger size) and try upgrading there. throwing it out there for the lack of better advice.
good luck!

Done that.(G)

If I didn't have a clone to fall back on, I'd be royally helixed.

One of the "solutions" from MS got all the way to rebooting, and then announced there was no bootable OS on the computer. And of course, W10 disables the Lenono F-key boot options, so I couldn't even boot from USB media to find out what had been done to which boot instructions on that drive.

Nice, huh?

Apparently there's a whole new secret-key process to regain UEFI boot abilities under W10. MS just throws out all the normal ones, without telling anyone about it.
